I've decided it's time start using my fathers pre 64 model 94 in 30-30 ,this gun will be hunting the farm that my father was born and raised on,it's been family owned for over 200 years. Now the problem is my old eyes and open sights are no longer an option, what would be the best solution for mounting a VIII in 1.5 x 5 I have sitting around,I do have several other rifles but looking towards carring some history and nostalgia this season,Thanks

Drilling and installing a side mount will bastardize that family heirloom and make it unwieldy. Have you considered aperture (peep) sights? Might still require drilling and tapping but definitely less obtrusive and may work for you, especially at the ranges the 30-30 is effective. A tang aperture brings the "peep" close to your eye. Good luck!

After several attempts to scope Winchester lever guns, with some success but always having something that wasn't quite right, I have decided the best method is to "home mount" a red dot or similar "mini" scope that has a bit of magnification.
It aint purty...but it works!! To make the mount you just need a few hardware store supplies and a couple garage tools...a couple short pieces of alum angle and some hardware machine screws . The only thing that needs ordering is a short piece of Ticanini scope base (less than 3 inches. The scope base mechanism screw attaches to the already drilled & tapped tang site position.
Tools needed ar, e screw driver, hack saw, small file to remove saw burs , and a drill of some kind either drill press( preferably) or a simple hand drill.
It aint gonna be a 400 yrd shooter with one of these scopes but 1-200 is sure doable.

A peep sight as suggested works for most people that struggle with older eyes and typical buckhorn's...... worth looking into or rather through!

The old Lyman steel peeps are nice.

Dr. Pearsons No Drill Rails is a good option, not sure if they still ship north under current regulations but it could be likely ordered through IRG's import service if needed.

The rail is forward of the action so if you want a magnified scope it would have to be a long eye relief scout type or possibly a pistol scope.
He makes a short section of rail that mounts to the rear sight dovetail as well for smaller red dots.

What vintage is the rifle? Are there holes factory drilled and tapped in the receiver for a peep?

Williams at one time made a side mount that used the existing holes in the receiver, along with a replacement screw for the link pin retaining screw. Pre & post 64 are different, you have to be careful to get the correct one. My brother had one on his post-64 and it worked reasonably well for a left hand shooter. All he had to do was tilt his head a little further over the comb. As a right handed shooter, I hated shooting his rifle. No cheek contact with the stock, and if you tried to use the open sights you would get a scope ring in the forehead.

The best solution may be a 336,been eyeing up one in 35,hate to leave the 94 in the safe as it has harvested well over 50 plus deer off the farm,I shot my first with it over 50 years ago and it defintetly is part of the farms history.I'll keep searching for options but drilling or tapping is not an options as it may not be the most expensive in my collection but it is the most cherished.Maybe lazer eye surgery!!lol

Agree with others here. Won’t put a scope on it. I have old eyes as well and ended up with Skinner Peep sites on my Winchester levers. Those pre 64 are too nice to scope in my opinion.

+1 on the peep sight.

Before reading that it was an heirloom, my recommendation was to trade it for a Marlin since you lose the best part about a 94 if you try to scope it, which is carrying the gun around the receiver like a suitcase handle.

But if you want to keep it, peep it. Williams are nice.

One member mentioned a side mount maybe Williams that uses the factory receiver sight holes and the finger lever pin stop hole. If the 94 was made after the very early 1950's no need to drill and tap anything. Side mounts are awkward but you can get used to anything if youre determined to use the rifle.
