98 mauser issues

A buddy has a 98 mauser in .308 Norma magnum that won't keep shells in the mag well.It is a hinged floorplate model and when loaded they pop out the top? Any ideas? Haven't had a look at it just yet as to where to start. Feed rails,follower or weak mag spring? I assume it was working prior.

Rails and internal box width. Only the bottom cartridge is affected by the follower.

Thank you...………...I was going to bring my Belgian Browning FN Safari 98 over to compare measurements. If too much of the rails have been removed I guess he's pooched? It's a custom 98 or I guess it would be working? Is the internal box magazine available in larger widths or custom?
