So I'm down in Vernon shooting in the Labour Day Classic. Shooting singles this morning and hitting them all. Couldn't miss. Shot 75 straight no problem. F@ck all to this, says I. Call for number 99, easy, piece of cake, do it all the time. Pull the trigger and watch that little orange bastard fly away without a mark on it. I killed the #### out of the last one though. This game drives me nuts.

Good shooting!! At least you set # 99 aside mentally and pounded # 100, thats how its supposed to be done! It doesn't always turn out that way though. Congrats on getting your focus back. And yes as soon as you tell yourself its easy you can kiss the next one goodbye, have to work hard for them all!!

I would love to get 99/100! I finally shot 25 in a row.

I understand your frustration though. But you did come back and smash the last one. Overall great job!

I know the feeling ! ;)

More than once shooting Skeet, I've shot a pretty 99 ... but can't say I've missed either # 98, 99, or 100 .... for me it's mostly either the first bird out on Station 1 or a Low 5 or 6 somewhere along the way. Trap, it could be anywhere, but more often a hard right from Station 1. Never shot a 100 straight at Sporting Clays, but have managed the first 8 stations straight on a 10 station course. Part way through 9, hit the first following pair then fluffed the next ... go figure.

Just about the time you start thinking "straight" or telling yourself "piece of cake" ... brain fart !

Pearl of wisdom hard learned .... "don't think, just shoot ! " ;)

I know the feeling. Shooting a registered shoot this past summer and had run 75 straight singles, and before that over 50 straight handicap in the previous event. Call for bird 92 or 93 on station 3. It comes out straight away and I just flat out miss it! Ran the last ones to finish at 99/100 in singles. I've never shot 100 straight in one event but I know I had run close to 150 straight between my handicap and the 92 singles I ran before the miss. Oh well, that's what keeps me coming back. It wouldn't be fun if you hit every single target you shot at.

All it takes is proper gun fit and lots of practice. I'm a relative newcomer to the sport and broke my first (and only) 100 last summer. Just shot 10,000 registered targets this summer. Daro Handy was in Vernon on Labour Day and shot his 400,000th registered target. He's in the record books with 505 straight from 27 yards. That takes some concentration.

The hardest part of shooting at the level you have attained is the psychological aspect. Almost any bird you miss at this point starts in your mind. Most Olympic or world class athletic teams have psychologists to coach the athletes from this aspect. Shooting is no different. If you want to consistently break targets assuming you have gun fit and the technical aspects mastered then mind control is the next hurdle and probably the toughest.

It is definitely a game of focus and many years ago a very good shooter I used to shoot with told me the older you get the harder it is to retain that focus. I remember at the time thinking that did not make one ounce of sense. But over the years I have come to believe there is something to that statement. I find it much harder to retain my focus over the course of an event compared with years ago. In my best year(2000) of registered shooting my singles average was 98.00 on 1400 targets and 90.79 on 1400 handicap @ 27 yards. I'd give anything to be back there again.

I am still anticipating the applause and congrats when I break my first 25, but I have fun every time I shoot regardless.!!

Great attitude !

There likely will be very little applause, but congrats all-round is to be expected. At many Clubs, it's also custom that your squad mates get to shoot your hat
tossed in the air following you're first straight ! If they're "on", you won't be wearing that hat any more. Keep a spare in the car/truck for incentive ! Remember to show a little humility ... 'cause your next coffee at Timmy's will still be at the regular price ! Even blind squirrels find a nut every now and then. ;)
