Looking for a new toy and I have never owned a 1911. I have shot a few and this is the way I want to go. I want to go 9mm based on cost of ammo. I have heard and read that some 1911s in 9mm don't perform very good. I am looking to spend about $1000 and will most likely be using it for IPSC and other shooting sports. I don't have the budget for an STI and I don't want a Norinco. What's out there that will work in my budget? I have done some research already but prefer answers from personal experience and not product reviews on manufacturer sites.

My first choice would be to wait for the 9mm version of the Colt Competition Government Model. Second choice would be the Springfield Range Officer. Either way, you're going to have to spend a bit more than $1,000.

Seraphim Armoury lists a variety of 9mm models. They are made in the Philippines and it appears that they are trying to put out a more upscale product than the other 1911s from that country. They are relatively new on the market and I'm not sure how good they actually are.

Colt 9mm Commander is available at Arms East, but more than $1K.
ParaOrdnance made a 9mm commander too.

They probably get them from Armscore in the Philippines and they are good pistols under various trade names such as SAM etc etc

STI Spartan is my advice, around $850 new, some used ones around. Bought one a few months back to shoot IPSC classic and it is very well put together and shoots darts.

Get good mags for it, that is the trick with 1911 9mm

Freedom ventures in Halifax( site sponsor ) is a sti dealer, might find used around your area...you won't be dissapointed...

I have a S&W Pro 9mm and I LOVE it. I got if from the EE, with 6 Wilson Combat mags (yep lucky!). Runs perfect, but I have not run it through IPSC. Just shooting for fun.

I'm with the ones above. Spartan is a great bang for the buck. If you keep your eyes open you can find a Trojan or Ranger for just under 1k on the EE. May take some patience though. I've had a few STI's in 9mm, and they all have been rock solid...just as reliable as my Trojan in 45 was.

Thanks,
Cal.

I've looked at STI in the past and heard nothing but good things about them. I will definitely give them a try. Freedom ventures has been around for a long time and are the "go to" vendor for the STI in Canada, I just need to get my hands on one first before making the purchase.

Just did a search of their site, no STI Spartan. Also did a search of local gun shops and nobody has the Spartan in 9mm. I'll keep looking. Thanks for the info.
