9mm 1911's

In regards to 1911's in 9mm would the standard 5" be a better choice over something in the commander length?
i had a Norc 1911 in .45 and as much as i liked the idea i much prefer to shoot 9mm.

What do you like? What have you tried that's been problematical? Thinking about adding one; very happy with my Ruger SR1911 in .45, but the idea of shooting 9mm through one has piqued the ol' brain box. Not least because I load a lot of 9mm now and would like to keep the whole reloading thing simpler. I know there are some crazy $$ boutique makes out there with rave reviews, but would like to stay under 3k - don't mind spending a bit extra up to that mark on something "nicer".

TT1900 beat me to it..................if you're ready to put $3K don't hesitate and go with a Les Baer. Or you can have a Colt for half (+/-)!

just gonna come out and say it.... if you like your Ruger SR1911 in 45 then why not pick up the Ruger SR1911 in 9mm?

Thanks again everyone for the input - re Les Baer's in particular, been reading no shortage of issues with their 9mm offerings on U.S. forums (not totally out of line with 9mm 1911's in general, esp Commander length). When they work, they work great but heaven forbid you have to deal with their customer service for one of their pistols that has issues. WC and DW on the other hand, rave reviews pretty well across the board.

I have and use for IPSC a Norc NP29. It shoots fine. I am competitive if my ammo is right. Bad reloads last time really messed with my time.

You may want to buy one to try the 9mm in a 1911 first before you spend money on the more expensive ones suggested above.

I guess I should also admit to having a Tanfoglio stock III extreme in 9 mm. It is very 1911 in format and function. Just much more competition refined.

Love my Les Baer, anyways I have an older Colt Commander 9mm with a Bar Sto match barrel in it. Shoots lights out. Picked it up for a grand last year. As for issues...1911 are pretty easy peasy to fix.

Not necessarily. The only gun I ever regret selling was my STI Ranger II in 9mm. It was a commander length 1911 and I can't say enough good things about it. I've had other commander and gov't length 9 mm 1911's over the years as well, but nothing that I liked as much as that Ranger II. I shot my entire Black Badge course with it without even the slightest hint of a hiccup.

the collective knowledge around manufacturing 1911s (particularly in calibers other than .45 ACP) seems to have moved ahead by leaps and bounds in the last 10 to 15 years; particularly in regards to magazine design and function. There is no way I would have recommended ANY 1911 in 9 mm 15 years ago; and back then I don't ever recall seeing or shooting one that I would call reliable.

These days, however, a well manufactured 9mm 1911 with quality magazines such as the ones form Tripp Research or Wilson Combat, will shoot as reliably with good ammo as any .45 acp 1911 does.

That was one of the factors that influenced my decisions not to buy the LB, though I suspect 99% that head to market are fine. The bigger factor was deciding to downsize and having no formal use for a 9mm 1911. At the end of the day, it would suck to be the 1% and get a lemon of a $3k pistol.

I think the DW PM9 for $1900 is probably hard to beat from a value standpoint, though I must confess to being drawn to a Colt rollmark. The lack of FCS, addition of a magwell, and the pony rollmark would make me consider the Colt GC for $400 more, though I doubt it shoots any better than the DW.

Tenda has the SR1911 in 9mm for under $1k. I know you appreciate nice things and the Ruger is not anything special, but it might scratch the itch? It would at least let you know if a 9mm 1911 is for you without going in too deep.

Nothing against Rugers! I have a couple of their revolvers and an SR1911 in .45 - all great guns that have been flawless in their operation for me. Just takes me awhile these days in deciding on a particular resolution to a particular itch lol, but the hunt is half the fun :) .

I have a para double stack 9mm, Remington R1 double stack ( essentially a para), Sig 1911 9mm TME and a Seraphim. By far Seraphim is best bang for the buck, Sig has the tightest tolerance for the slide and frame match. Para has better trigger out of the 4.

I'm sure the colt and ruger are great for the money. But if I were you, given you have some pretty nice 9mms already, I'd probably set the floor at Dan Wesson. I have a Bruin and I'm highly impressed with it. I would definitely buy another DW but next 1911 will be 38 super

For what it's worth I have a colt competition however I wish I would have saved a little longer and got a dan wesson instead.

My STI Trojan in 9mm would likely be the last pistol I would ever sell or own. I have more expensive pistols and .45 calibre 1911s. The Trojan 9mm just makes sense. And works...

Waiting to hear answers on a couple inquiries, will see how it turn out. Thanks again to everyone for all their input!

Bill, you know that I believe a 9mm 1911 to be an abomination to God. I feel like you are doing this on purpose.

How do you feel about them in .22lr, 38 Super, 10mm, 460 Rowland and lastly the .50 GI?

Bill and I are friends, so this is ribbing. But, to answer your question, any time you venture beyond .45ACP in a 1911, you are at risk of wrath. This usually manifests itself in less than perfect functionality but that is because of mercy.

I love my 1911’s!!!!
I started with 45acp but have now moved on to 9mm. One of my 45’s was a Ruger, in fact it was my first 1911. This gun was 100% reliable but the lockup was not the tightest and it was not the most accurate. In ipsc I used an STI Trojan modified by a local gunsmith. It is extremely accurate and the trigger is like the proverbial glass rod breaking.

With my hand loads of 200g lswc and 700x the 45’s were soft shooting, accurate and reliable. I used these in ipsc for several seasons.
It was the policing of brass that killed me!!

So off to 9mm 1911’s I went. I currently have an STI Trojan with a RK Custom fitted bull barrel that shoots flat as can be and is accurate. Also in the stable is a customized Tanfoglio 1911 that is very accurate and 100% reliable.
Both of these guns are fed 124g Campro’s with 3.9g Titegroup.
Both of these guns are very soft shooting and fast follow up shots or double taps are 1” apart. Policing 9mm brass is not a problem as well.

Hey it's not as bad as a flashy red SIG....or well, maybe it is! You don't wanna know what I've been looking at in DE 50AE and I don't mean the regular hohum gold plated thing :p
