9mm/40cal mags?

i just purchaced an older (1975)browning hi-pwr 9mm, with one mag.
can i use .40 cal mags in it? will it boost the capacity leagally?
i have a S&W m&p9 can i do the .40cal mag thing with it?

Sorry, we just go over this about once a week. Yes, it's legal if it works. With the Browning, I'm not sure if it does, but you can do what you're proposing with plenty of semis. Some of them feed 100%, some of them puke all of the rounds onto the floor. Maybe someone'll chime in about your particular brand of gatt, or do a search for one of the multiple threads on this topic & see if anyone commented on the Browning.
