Does anyone have a link to the different types of 9mm bolt carriers for AR's? I know there are several different types in the rifle calibers (SA versus Heavy, full circle versus half, etc...). What are the different 9mm versions? All the ones I have seen look the same, but I assume there must be a semi version and a heavy version? Would one have any advantage over the other as far as reliability goes?

i thought there was just two types, ramped and not. the bolt buffer is different too. the OEM ones are too short and allow the carrier to bounce and slam against the bolt stop, bending it.

get a proper one from Slash on ar15.com

Current RRA , CMMG etc Bolt / Carrier ( really just a bolt ) are all M16 ( will trip auto sear ). This is unlike standard carriers for AR platform were semi only carriers have more of the tail end of carrier removed so it cannot trip auto sear

The RRA bolt is not ramped from factory, the CMMG Enhanced is

You can argue that Colt / RRA has been putting out non ramped bolts for a long time. Without the ramp trigger reset is much more abrupt, which is harder on your pins. Having said that I had over 3000rds through my before ramping and never had a problem

I ramped mine when I went to a RRA / CMC / Gieslle trigger groups in my lowers. Without the ramp, many of these triggers will lock up the bold ( see pic below showing the notch the trigger gets hung up on )

Here is a RRA bolt that has not been ramped

I have an ASA 9mm upper, and I would judge the bolt is not ramped (there is a v groove clearly visible in the below picture).

This leads me to my next question - while researching 9mm uppers, I found a site which indicated an M16 hammer would work with the 9mm bolt, but an AR15 hammer wouldn't. Do I have to have a 9mm special hammer, or will an M16 hammer work?

the ar15 hammer has a notch on the top leading edge. it most likely will jam the gun with an unramped bolt.

that notch in the unramped bolt and the notch of a stock ar15 hammer fit together almost perfect. major fubar if that happens

simple solution, use a 9mm hammer ( just ans m16 hammer that has been neutered so no FA) this is cheap but the hammer pins and the lower take a beating from the harsh angle of the unramped bolt.

ramping of the bolt gives the hammer more time to reset. if you look at the two bolt, the end of their ramps is when the hammer is reset. the ramped bolt has more the double the time so the hammer pin and lower don't nearly the abuse.
