Good morning!

I have been entertaining the idea of purchasing/building a 9mm AR. In preparation for this I have been doing some research, in most cases from American forums which has lead me to ask some questions.

I am going to assume that it is cheaper to purchase the complete outfit rather than build it.

My questions are this, a lot of the debate in the American forums revolves around the magazines the particular system uses. Prices of magazines in Canada differ a lot from our American brothers so which magazines are the cheapest, easiest to obtain here?

Is anyone using a system/brand that is 100% reliable out of the box? Or put another way any recommended brands?

oh and do these systems use dedicated lowers or do they use the magazine block?

I couldn't believe the prices of some of the different magazines available, makes you want to cry.

Well as a "former" owner, I would say that if?? I were to do it again, I would want something that takes Glock mags. Colt mags are hard to find and expensive, UZi mags not so much, however they are all 5rd? not really worth it. The last "brand" that caught my eye was Quarter Circle 10? I think there may be a few here already, and IRG is your man for the import. Good Luck.

IRG has the Palmetto State setups in stock from time to time. They use a mag block and Colt mags. I'd stick to a dedicated Glock mag setup if I were you so you have access to 10 rounds and a plethora of cheaper(?!?!) mags.

I thought about this myself, but ultimately figured I would go with a Non Restricted setup if I bought a pistol cartridge carbine... Something like a Sub2K or JR.

Hmm I hadn't thought of the NR pistol carbines. I just thought they would all be R. Thanks for the info guys it is something I will have to look at.

I was looking at the AR carbine because I have the hankering to build something again and thought that might be the way to scratch the itch.
Non restricted would be nice. Take it out and make those nasty gophers dance!!

I have a first gen sub2k Kind of a gimmick. Pretty wobbly and if you want to fold it forget about an optic. Haven't herd if the gen 2 is any better. I was looking at the JRC for quite a long time but then found out about the TNW Aero survival rifle.
Picked mine up on a black Friday sale for 200 bux off. LOVE IT! Came with a cheap ass chineese scope that does the job and holds a good zero. Non restricted with an easily removable barrel. Takes Glock mags.
Look it up Im super happy I bought it.
Oh and if they make it to Canada there are caliber change up kits for it to .40 slow and weak and .45 acp

I just finished my 9mm AR pistol build about a month ago, since I shoot GLock pistols already, it made sense for me to go with a dedicated GLOCK magazine lower, I didnt even have to buy mags as I already have tons from my GLock 19 and 17. Also since it uses a Glock "pistol" magazines, I am able to have 10 round capacity magazines..I used a QuarterCircle10 small frame GLock lower, barrel and bolt

So far I have about 300 rounds through it, its a lot of fun. It shoots great I am just playing around with different buffers to see how it affects the blowback/recoil

If your looking for a cheap option, then dont look at mine for ideas LOL

For a Colt style system Metalform mags are the way to go. They're the OEM for Colt and can be had stateside for a reasonable amount. Irunguns should be able to get them for you.

Whatever happened to the 10 rd pistol mags for Colt? Quester brought some in years ago and then they just kind of disappeared.

I have a Bushmaster Carbon-15 in 9mm that I picked up for a steal of a deal a couple years ago. I bought it from a guy on the site who had done something and cracked the upper receiver. I swapped in a slickside upper and it hasn't missed a beat since. Uses Colt mags which I thought might be hard to find but within a couple months of owning it I had found 3 5/32 and a couple 10 round pistol mags to go along with the 3 Questar 10/32 that it came with.

Prior to finding that deal I was looking into building one and the prices for the parts was crazy. Mag blocks are expensive and dedicated lowers are a lot of coin as well. If I was going to build though I would go with a dedicated Glock mag lower since Glock 17 mags are easy to find (usually) and they're all 10 round.

The 9mm AR is a lot of fun and I enjoy mine a lot more than I ever did any of the pistol caliber carbines I've owned. I've owned and sold off a Sub2000, a Kriss Vector, and an HK USC which were all fine but just seemed like too much money tied up in something that I didn't find much use for. Being restricted doesn't bother me as these aren't good for much besides fun plinking at 50 yards or less. I was able to ring the gong at 200 yards with my Vector but for gopher hunting and stuff like that a 22 is still cheaper to shoot and if I want a little more excitement on the little critters I just grab my 17HMR or 17 Fireball so I don't have to worry about ricochets with those pistol slugs bouncing off into who knows where.

Depends if you're on a tight budget or not. Building one is fun but buying a complete rifle will be cheaper.
As far as I know Lone Wolf is the only company that makes dedicated 9mm lowers that use Glock 17 mags and Questar is the only place I know that can get them.
I haven't done any shopping for them since I got mine so I'm not sure who else carries parts or complete rifles. Last time I saw anyone advertising them IrunGuns was bringing in uppers.
Sorry I can't be more help.
