I will be looking for a 9mm upper for my AR in the next short while.

I am leaning towards Colt or RRA (preferably RRA as they are more reasonably priced) uppers.I will need the 9mm hammer, buffer, and magwell adaptor, plus mags. I know about the availablity of 10 round "pistol" mags that can be used in these uppers, so now that ruling makes it more worth while for me to get a 9mm upper.I already have a spare lower just waiting.......;)

So lets hear the good/bad, what to look out for regarding the 9mm uppers.

Thx. SKBY.

I have the Olyimpic Arms upper it works great no need for a special hammer ,mags are cheaper and the lower is not dedicated but if you have lots of money the route you are going is good as well

I don't think either will do you wrong. I've always had Colt 9mm guns and still do and it functions fine. But again, I would be happy with RRA as well. As you know, both utilize the same mag well and therefore the same Uzi type mags.

If the 'having to have' Colt stuff doesn't make any difference to yourself, go with what you can find, and is cheaper.

BTW, no need for any different internals, ie. hammer, as any AR/M16 hammer will function fine. The heavier buffer with tungsten weight was introduced for the full auto SMG to prevent bolt bounce. In a dedicated SA gun, not a huge deal. It is a blow back action and therefore some will say the heavy buffer is needed, but I dunno. I've run mine with a regular 556 buffer AND I have removed the tungsten weight out of the bolt and my gun runs fine. Now after a few kbillion rounds it may show excess wear, more than if I had left in the two weights, but I haven't pounded enough rounds out of my guns to be able to make that determination, yet.

If you get the bolt "contoured" on the bottom, it will be easier on the hammer/trigger pins. And if you get that done, you will need the hammer "M16" style. That is with the top leading corner of the hammer still rounded, as opposed to the Colt cuts on the AR/semi auto hammer. Getting the bolt "contoured" is about the only mod that I believe is benificial.

All this naturally is one guys opinion.

Wish there was someone who did the bolt ramping up here. Not worth any hassles trying to ship a bolt down south.

Just to add, I also use my same lower for 9 and 556. The mag block is a 5 second insertion and removal (don't go there:redface: ) so I have one pelican "kit" ready to take the one lower with 556 gear and the 9mm upper and related stuff, all in one case. A good 'bug out' kit.

Any pictures of this. I did a search awhile back and could only find places doing it. No pics.

what length barrel are you lookin at? what optics ? stock ? rail or hand guards or free float ?

Looking at a RRA 10.5" barrel.Eventually will go to some sort of FF rail.Might try the Daniel Defense rails, KAC RIS, or get another Larue 9.0 rail (or just swap the one I have on my 10.5" LMT upper.........).

Will run Iron sights and an Aimpoint.

just don't use an AR15 hammer with an uncontoured bolt. locks up solid.
+1

I got a little ahead of myself on my build and threw the bolt in to check it out before swapping hammers. Cocked it and it stayed to the rear, had to separate the upper from the lower to free things up. Stupid thing is, I had read that this would happen, but still forgot to swap them. If you use an M16 or DPMS hammer than you will have no problems. I use the 9mm hammer in mine and apparently it will work in a 5.56 no problem but I haven't tried it. I believe that ramping the bolt is a no-no if you're using the 9mm hammer.

As for which upper to use...Use whatever upper you want, the only difference with a factory 9mm upper is the hole for the gas tube isn't drilled and the cut out for the bolt cam isn't machined. Myself, I prefer the look of the Colt but not the prices, so I built mine with an SP1 upper and lower and used RRA for all the 9mm parts.

Start saving your pennies for mags, they ain't cheap.
