9mm AR problem

Hi guys I am a total AR newb so please don't slam me for being dumb. I disassembled my rifle when I first bought it from Questar. I think I put it back together properly but I am not so sure. Anyways when testing the charging handle when I first bought it after I reassembled the rifle the bolt got caught back in the rifle and wouldn't release even with the bolt release. Additionally I couldn't even take the rifle apart after that without removing the buffer tube and spring and buffer. Then I was able to break down the rifle. I reassembled it and then tested again. Worked fine this time.

I took the rifle to the range today. Fired 2 10 round pistol mags through her without incident. Third mag I had a jam a case got stuck in the ejection port. But that wasn't real problem as I cleared the jam I noticed the bolt was held back. I tried to release the bolt with the bolt catch release. Not happening. I tried to pull the charging handle back and release the bolt with no mag in it of course. No cigar. It was same problem I had when I first reassembled the rifle again. So I am here to ask why is this happening? Anyone have similar problems? I took some pictures to see if I properly put the buffer, buffer spring and buffer tube back together properly. But I didn't retighten the castle nut or anything yet. Any thoughts or help? :(:confused:

your buffer TUBE needs to be screwed in far enough to keep the buffer retaining detent from poping out it is NOT held in by your buffer

(in the pics it appears that your tube is not screwed far enough in)

+1 (beat me to it) the buffer retainer has to be held down by the front edge of the buffer tube, or as soon as the buffer is forced back, the buffer retainer will come up out of it's place and eff things up. Just screw it in far enough to hold the retainer, not far enough to make contact with the "pin" on the retainer.

What kind of problems will there be if its in Contact with the "pin" of the retainer?
 
That selector is called a "Star Safety Selector" made by RRA.

It will not matter if the tube touches the retaining pin or not. So long as the tube retains the pin. You will be limited to how much the tube retains the pin as you will need to index the tube for the buttstock to sit square with the rifle.

Sometimes with an out of spec tube, the end would need to be filed to get to the proper indexing for the buttstock and there be enough meat to retain the pin at the same time.
 
Hard to tell from the picture angle, but it also appears that you do not have the Receiver End Plate up against the back of the receiver (which makes me wonder what's holding the Take-Down Pin Detent and Spring in place?), plus the castle nut is not tightened down so it's not holding the Recevier End Plate up against the Receiver and locking everything together.

The extension tube needs to be screwed in (as the guys have already pointed out) and the Receiver End Plate needs to be properly positioned, holding the Detent and Spring capture behind, and the Castle Nut needs to be tightened to lock everything in place.

But I didn't retighten the castle nut or anything yet

As I said in my first post I didn't retighten it again after I took down the rifle. When I was using it this was all tightened down.
