9mm AR Project - latest photo post #26- Updated!

The Spike's heavy buffer is longer than normal and is supposed to eliminate the problem of breaking bolt catches. Does your buffer rattle around more than that for the 5.56?

You wouldn't by any chance have an extra 5/30 steel mag for sale would ya?

O'Kelly's Boys

No buffer rattle at all.

Sorry no mags for sale - this is early Colt 32/5 mag with steel follower very hard to find.

Only those and the plastic 10 round RRA marked Pro-mags are reliable in my AR.

Looks like that ACE stock comes with a standard, A1/A2 receiver extension, so your spring is a loose fit without the 9mm stock spacer and so it bounces and rattles.

You were right, it was the A1/A2 buffer tube. Live and learn.

I was looking at the ARFX-E stock, but it seems a little too short.

Magpul order from Wolverine inbound.

Got a little busy, but finally got around to correcting the build. Here is the 99% solution. Magpul stock and grip, milspec buffer tube and carbine buffer spring (thanks Wolverine, fast work and John patiently answered my obvious questions). Besides additional mags, the only thing I want to add at this point is a vertforegrip and sling.

With the proper buffer spring and Magpul stock there is no rattle with the Spikes heavy buffer. Feels and sounds really good. Lesson learned.

I love the look and feel of this rig. Everything is positive and tight. The nose is a little heavy, but I like it. It is very quick to the shoulder and points well.

The Uzi mag needs to be modified, see my other thread

It just looks right and I want steel mags (that work).

I still have to get it to the range to see how it runs. That may be a little way off as I just found out we are moving to Grande Prairie at the end of the month. I have faith in the Spikes Tactical magblock that any adjustment required will be easy to do.

Some notes on the build:

1) I did not have a dedicated 9mm AR upper vice block. I found that in order to get the dust cover installed it had to go on before the barrel nut. So I cut out the top half of the vice block from the front of the 9mm deflector back in order to mate it to that side of the upper. Worked like a charm. It should still work fine for a standard AR or I'll just buy another set and call this one my 9mm AR vice block set.

2) This is my second total build and if you just take your time its no problem. Even the detent and springs went in easier this time (only shot one across the room once). I followed the build info at ARFdotCOM and Brownells AR video section.

Finally joined the 9mm AR club.

Cheers,

Holy Thread Resuraction Batman!

Anyway, I finally took the backburner project out of medium term storage and took the 9mm AR to the range to see how she runs and man I am a happy camper! She runs like a top! After some initial issues with reloads, I've run 150 rds of Blaser (brass) 9mm through 2 CP-Lar 10rd mags without a single slow down. Locked after last rd every time and no issues with mags loaded to max. Almost illegal how much fun a shorty 9mm AR can be.

Now that I know the CP-Lar 10rd mags run smooth with the mag block where it is, I'm going to mod my Uzi mags with the cut for mag release at the same location as the CP-Lar mags. They won't lock back on last rd, but meh.

Tried to get video, but of course the battery was dead. Will try again this wknd.

Came out nice for sure...

Another annoying thing I noticed on mine is the plastic deflector is getting chewed by the brass..There is noticeable wear on the deflector. I just may ditch it completely and install standard dust cover...

I have about 5k through mine and lately all I feed it is my cast lead..

I like the look of the 9mm case deflector and it does push the cases well to the side. I wonder if they would pull more to the rear without the large deflector?

If I were to do another one I would probably wait for a dedicated 9mm upper with no forward assist and double deflector, but all in all I'm pleased and its a dream to shoot.

I can see a lot more 9mm lead going down range in the future. I hope its 223 brother doesn't take it personally.
