I have never fired a 9mm carbine and am wondering how it would be for whacking gophers aside from from plinking at steel. As well as max range for small game hunting

I have no experience hunting with 9mm rounds, but I would guess the effective range would be under 100 yards. You may want to check with your local hunting regs to determine if you're even allowed to hunt with them. Others will be able to give you better info on that than I will.

I know from experience 45 ACP hardball is effective as hell on groundhogs (some of which are pretty big). I wouldn't hesitate to use a 9mm (especially with HP's) on anything up to coyote inside 100 yards.

22lr has been doing the job for years just fine, and the 9mm is a big step up in terms of power.

I think they might be effective to up to 200 meters, depending upon the ammo and carbine. In the following article on the Beretta M38 the effective range is given as 200 meters against two leggers, however might be difficult to hit a small target like gophers

I did 50 yards on bench with 115gr CCI, 124gr FOC using my JRC mounted a 9 x 30 scope got slightly < 1 to 1 inch groups no sweat. Tried on 100 yards it opens up to around 3+ inches for me. Result could be my total lack of skill as well. The 115gr CCI groups seems a little tighter btw.

My experience with the JR is the same..accurate enough and you can use some pretty stout loads if you wanted. I don't know about gophers at 100..certainly at 50. No go for hunting in Southern Ontario but doesn't mean it's not suitable for pest control!

I can tell you 9mm takes out raccoons and coyotes just fine..

Lethal range and effective range are two very different things. I don't think anyone is doubting the power of a 9mm, which moves at approximately the same velocity, but with 3x the mass of a .22lr. Anything within 100 yards is very likely fair game, while anything much past will be difficult to hit due to the rainbow trajectory of the cartridge.

I used to shoot a 16" Colt 9mm carbine. It will go to 100m no problem against paper targets. The bullet of course drops more than 5.56.

If the target has lots of height, not a big deal, but gopher is a small target and has very little height for vertical dispersion.

Very good videos on the 9mm! Thanks guys. I am debating between a non restricted mpx or scorpion. Look like a lot fun for plinking in a gravel pit
