I have been shooting DRG lead bullets for years. Cheap and accurate - but the smoke from the lube is annoying and a problem in some rapid fire situations.

I bought a couple thousand CamPro 124 gr plated bullets (the HP version) and have decide to use a jug of HP38 (231) that I have on the shelf.

I have also decided to compete only with a red dot sight. My old eyes just can't handle irons well.

So I loaded a hundred each of 3.8gr, 4.1 gr and 4.4 gr and shot each pistol with each of the three loads.

I wanted to see if a pistol had a strong favourite load; if one load would be "good enough" for all the pistols (6 of them) and I wanted to see if each pistol would cycle properly with all 3 loads.

The two Girsans would not cycle the mild load of 3.8gr.

There was a slight preference for the mid power load of 4.1 - so that is what I will load. Have not yet Chronied the 3 loads.

I've tried using my 9mm powder (Silhouette) in my 38spl, but never tried using my 38spl powder (HP38) in my 9mm.
I recall that when I did try Silhouette in 38spl, the powder charge was similar or equal to the HP38 charge.

My experience is the same as Ganderites; I load to function in my 9mm at 4.0 gr. They run fine, and shoot very accurately from my Nork NZ85B. They are a little light in my buddies glocks and M & Ps; function fine in a Sphinx, and Tanfoglio. I am also using Campro 124 HPs. They punch a neat hole compared to a round nose. I am using the same powder in my GP100 (.38 Special loads) 3.1 gr. HP38 behind DRG LRNFP and LSWC, both are very accurate; the LRNFP load easier from my speed loaders.

I like HP38; clean and soft shooting.

Campro 124 RN with 4.2 HP38 got 132 power factor in 5 inch 1911 para.

Thanks. So my 4.1 is on the edge with a 4.3" barrel. i will Chrony. may need a bit more to make PF.

This was the first time I fired all 5 of my red dot 9mms in the same session. The Glocks had the poorest triggers, although these are 'good" Glock triggers. The Canik was the best and the 2 Girsans were quite good. Remarkably good considering I paid about $320 each for them.

When I was reloading 9mm with a powder-coated 125 grain RN bullet, 4.0 grains of WW231 was the bare minimum I would employ. Sure, you could add a little more but 4.0 worked very well. I have heard nothing but good reviews of the Campro 124 HP. They would not slip down the barrel as easily as my cast & PC bullet, there would be more friction too, so anywhere between 4.1g-4.4g should be okay.

UPdate:

I returned to the range withe the two pistols that seemed to perform best for me - the Canik SPfx and the Girsan 28 TX

I tested the 124 CamPro HP over 4.1gr of 231 (HP38), the load that looked most promising last week.

It was accurate in both pistols, but would not cycle the Girsan about 30% of the time. The 4.4 gr load would be needed.

I also tested the CamPro 147 Flat Point over 3.6gr of 231 and 3.6gr. Both loads cycled the Girsan just fine, and both were accurate. The 3.8 gr load shot to the same MPI as the 124 4.0

My 9mm loading was 4.1 grains Tightgroup behind whichever brand of plated bullet was available at the time. Worked, and made IPSC power factor in a 5" barrel.

I'd say "is" rather than "was" since it's what I'd churn out today if I didn't already have a backlog of loaded rounds, but haven't had to fill any 9mm in awhile.

(Probably should have bathed in CLP early in the COVID lockdown; I find myself an awfully rusty shooter now!)
