9mm defence loads?

9mm...Winchester frangible ( ricochet a non issue)
.45....just about anything :D
shotgun....don't use bird shot......It'll only give the homicidal crack head a really bad skin condition and piss him right off :p load with buck or buck and ball.
Now that is only if your allowed to use a firearm for self defence in Canada....which you are not!
In Canada, a baseball bat is for playing baseball with....anything else and it becomes a "weapon"
A kitchen knife is for cutting vegetables and the like.....anything else and it becomes a "weapon"
A firearm is to either collect, hunt with or take to the range to play with....if ever used for anything else....it's a "weapon", Canadian citizens are not allowed "weapons".....somebody help me out here and look up the statutes.

For a defense gun go with a stock norinco .45 and con-bore .45 ammo. Never use re-loads!!!!! A stock gun that has been fired a lot will work fine as long as the magazines are of good quality.

I'm not an expert, and others' opinions will likely vary but it seems to me that finding out what your local LEOs carry would be a good first step. LE ammunition is designed for shooting people and the market is competitive enough that bad designs are being dropped or improved on by the major companies. It would also seem to me that if the issue is raised about your 'extra deadly' HP's you could point to the local constabulary and ask why they have them if they are so heinous.

....WHAT!!!......HOW DARE YOU SPEAK IN SUCH A RATIONAL MANNER, WHAT'S MORE.....YOU'RE MAKING SENSE.....THE NERVE!!!:bangHead:...:p

I'm new to the train of thought here so have some patience. Can people really continue an attack after being shot in the chest or guts with a 9 mm? Is it just adrenaline at that point? I would just assume you would be really messed up.

Yes, yes, and yes. We should not assume that our shots will have any immediate or timely effect - instead, we should presume that they may not - and we should continue to fight until the threat has been stopped. A pelvic shot that fractures the pelvis may result in the attacker being unable to ambulate, but the only guaranteed immediate stop is a CNS shot.

There is one case I've heard of where a CBP agent emptied his pistol to slide lock into his attacker - with the whole gunfight caught on video from a CBP helicopter - and, even then, the attacker continued his advance. (Then he died.) The trainer who related that incident to me concluded with: "People need time to die."

I leave two black talons by my front door, bullet side up and two by the back door in the same fashion. They have killed an estimated 247 potential home invaders while I slept comfortably. I say estimated because there is usually so little left of them that it is hard to know if there was one or two. Of course they are .45. I used to use 9mm however not only were they ineffective at protecting me from intruders, but one of those 9mm stole my tv and the other raped my wife.

And the odds of a pistol rounds doing enough damage to the pelvis to effect mobility is pretty slim. The only way it will is if you hit the hip joint. Rifle rounds are a different story.

Bang on with the CNS shot.

Even a round through the lungs or heart (no matter what caliber) may not incapacitate soon enough to prevent the subject from achieving his intended goal.

For self defense, if that is the sole purpose, then SPEED is what you should be looking for (aka.....SKILL)
Hollow point, FMJ, or lead cast RN is totally irrelevant.

Place your pistol on the bench at your range, slide open with 1 mag next to it loaded with 1 round. Have two other mags on your hip each loaded with 1 round.
Fire all 3 mags in 4 seconds or under at 25 yrds while being able to hit a human sized target.

If you're worried about defense, then this is where the rubber meets the road.
Ammo type is redundant.

Training, dry fire practice, drills practice and repetition followed by real time range replication.............that's it.

Forget about the ammo type becasue it doesn't matter ;)

It can take approximately 11 seconds after the heart is destroyed (not just pierced by a bullet) for the brain to feel the effects of blood starvation. In those 11 s the attacker can kill a lot of people. The only 100% instantly incapacitating shots are to the spinal cord in the neck region (immobilizes both arms and legs) and to the brain. People have been shot with 12 gauge slugs, buck shot, .357 Magnum (the famous Rem or Fed 125 gr JHP), .44 Magnum, .308 Win and all other kinds of bullets and kept on going. The myth about the .45 ACP is just that, myth created by Americans and the .45 ACP legend does not stand the analysis of thousands of documented shootings examined. Human resiliency to wounds is the main reason why in real combat training you learn that you keep on shooting until your attacker is out of the fight.
