9mm Higher Mass = Lower Recoil?

Did the Black Badge training at AMA in Dartmouth this weekend. Great shoot, and great instructors. I was having problems with my handloads and one of the instructors suggested I try 147 grain bullets instead of the 124gns I had.

I can't recall his exact words, but the gist of his argument was that the lighter bullet translated to more torque and as a result more 'snap' to the recoil, the logic there being that a heavier bullet would produce less torque and have a more manageable recoil.

is that so?
 
I was told the same thing when I picked up my 1k rounds of 124gr from my supplier. He even gave me a left-over box(about 15 left) of 147gr to try next time i'm out.

He is saying the 124 "snaps" while the 147 has a "fatter" slower recoil.

I'll see next week-end, i'll try them back to back.
 
It's subjective. Loaded to the same PF, 124 and 147 gr bullets produce the same net amount of recoil. The lighter bullets tend to feel snappier. The heavier bullets move slower, and many people seem to prefer the gentler roll compared to the snap of the lighter bullets.

Give the 147's a try at the same PF as your current load. See what works for you.
 
I prefer the heavier bullet over the lighter faster moving bullet in my production guns.
 
E=MC2 so the lighter, faster moving 124 gr. bullet loaded to the same power factor as the 147 will have more Kinetic energy and thus, more violence.

Some people like the quicker, snappier return on the sights with the lighter bullets and don't mind the extra bark. They like the sights to snap up in recoil and snap back down to neutral just as quickly. Others find that with the softer push of the 147's they are more easily able to track the sights all the way through their arc and thus, achieve greater consistency and faster clock times on their follow-up shots.

Torque is actually greater on the heavier bullet due to greater mass (inertia) and bearing surface engaging the rifling and inducing twist. But it's nothing to worry over.
