At the moment all my books/manuals have not arrived yet and I don't have the data for the bullets I just purchased.

I am wondering, generally speaking if the total length of the ammunition should be the same as purchased ammo.

for example I have factory windchester 115 gr 9mm round nose, would 125 round nose and 150 JHP be the same lenght?

I believe SAMMI spec lists the max OAL as 1.169.

You will find JHP's or truncated cone bullets tend to run best from 1.110 - 1.130

I did check out that site to no avail, Im sure it will be usefull in the future however.

I purchased 231 powder, federial 100's Wolf 9mm 125 fr RN amd some Hornady .355" 147 GR XTP.

I should have pought bullets to match factory rounds...a newb mistake
 
You will need to use a length that matches data in your manual so it fits in your magazine and chambers in your gun. This will be different for various bullets you try. Also you must be careful if you seat a bullet too far into the case it can increase pressure. Thus you won't likely be making your 147gr loads the same length as your 115gr (depending on bullet type).

No need to buy the same bullet as factory ammo you haven't made a mistake.
 
X2 on hk33, 147 loa can be 1.110 to 1,125+ depending on the ojive , eg aim @ 1.110 & rainier @ 1.125, you have to fit each bullet to your barrel, & not too long for the mag. 231 @ 3.8 to start up to 4.1 is a nice load, your looking for 950 ft/sec with a 147. happy crunching

Rubicon I would wait until you have a manual, or look closely at some data printed by a powder maker like Hodgdon. When you get a good idea of how to load from the powder and bullets makers tested data and some experience, it will then be easier and safer to look at load advice from other people/internet.

Then when people make suggestions you can compare this to the manuals to see if it makes sense and is safe. The advice for loads from people like me or others online could be wrong or mistaken, and hard to understand without some previous experience and manuals to confirm.

Load a half dozen long - say 1.135, and stuff them in a magazine. is there still clearance so they don't bind? Not all mags are the same.

Pull the barrel out of your pistol an use it as a chamber guage. Drop a factory round into the chamber. Notice how it goes in smoothly and clunks against the chamber mouth?

Now drop in your home made round. Does it also clunk? Is it bottoming on the case mouth or on the bullet? if on the bullet, it won't clunk and the case will stick out farther. Seat the bullet deeper till it does not hit the chamber throat.

My Norinco 45ACP pistols have very short throats, so I seat the bullets in all my ammo deep enough to fit the Norcs. It feeds and shoots fine in the others.
