I'm fiddling around with my 9mm Luger hand loads (I'm trying to make the prettiest cartridge possible with my current equipment). I think I am at a disadvantage since I am using LEE dies but its all I have for now. WSS nor Cabelas had RCBS when I was in the market a few months back. Anyway...Moving along...My problem is that I have been getting some very slight bulging in the case right below the base of the bullet. I figure it is because I am not flaring enough but I'm not really sure. Since I am unsure and really quite new to hand loading, I thought I would ask you fine reloaders out there - how far do you flare you 9mm luger brass prior to bullet seating? Does anyone measure the diameter of their case necks after flaring? I am using the LEE factory crimp die in the end but the bulge is there prior to crimping. I am seating Aim Projectiles, 124gr .356" diameter, CJ RN bullets to an overal length of 1.125"

Thanks!

Have you ever measured the diameter after flaring? Have a number? Just curious...One man's idea of "Just enough to fit the bullet" may be different from another man's idea. Just curious is all...Thanks though...

I have a slight bulge in the brass as well after handloading some 9mm. I flare just enough to allow the bullet to enter the brass. The bulge to me looks like it forms cause of the bullet forming the brass as it gets pressed into the case. Just like spandex covering a plump lady's beautiful thighs.

LOL...Nice! But yes...That is the same bulge I am talking about. I realize that the 9mm Luger case is slightly tapered and this bulge is probably caused by the straight shanked bullet expanding the tapered brass casing as it is seated. I was just curious as to whether or not expanding a little more might fix this problem then go over it with the factory crimp die to tighten things up. Currently I am expanding to around .381-.383" diameter.

Just enough to set the bullet in easily. The less wear on your cases the better. When I started reloading I was doing the fuill 0.020" recommended in a video manual and I still got the buldging, less flare makes no difference IMO. More likely cause is the sizing die. I also get it in .45ACP, but not .38spl or .44mag.

Sometimes you can reduce the bulge if you use a boat tail bullet--also some makes of brann are thinner and will bulge less. Lighter weight bullets sometimes will help also.

OH DO I GET THAT:cool:

I like plump beautiful thighs and it describes my 9 mms!

I do have some adjustments to do in my expander station ,on the just enough to allow the bullet to enter thing.
