9mm MFS ammo

I just read an article about this stuff and the so-called plating they use to cover the steel bullet. They shot this stuff(a few brands) and then looked at it under a micro scope. Result in their opinion was the wash or plating did nothing to protect your barrel. End result was you are grinding steel through steel. I would be a little leary about running this ammo myself.
Cheap is cheap, barrels not so cheap in some cases.

That's interesting, do you have a link to the article?

I put 500rnd's thru a CZ and a Taurus, it's quite dirty but shoots on par with UMC... Like most Ammo it was cheap when it first hit the shelf now it's gone up some locally, personally I reload 9mm so if I find a great deal on factory stuff I will buy some to try and stock up if I like it...

I have 2000rnds of UMC under the bench and 50rnd's of MFS 9mm if that means anything to you.

I've shot a bit of MFS through my Shadow and have seen that it is very dirty but always worked. Fishing World in Hamilton, ON has it for $100 plus tax for 500 which works out to 22.6 cents a round if you pick up. It's probably the best deal in the GTA for factory. I'm starting reloading but anyone who isn't i'd say go ahead and try it out or search the EE for the occasional deal.

Just found it. It's from Front Sight magazine May/June 2011 Vol28, no.3
Article is called Steel "core" Ammo:Fact and Fiction. Written by Eric Jay Miller, from the Northwestern University Electron probe instrumentation center. He's a scientist and a USPSA shooter.
Not sure if this will be found on line but that is all the info i can give you.
Excellent article though!

Sorry but i don't have a scanner, and the article is six pages long.
Someone with awesome google-fu will find it and post a link i hope. Me, my computer skills suck. That and i have a patience problem.:)

I would hope that the company producing the barrels is using a better grade of steel than the company turning out the "budget" ammo, elsewise, someone's got some 'splaining to do, and I want a massive discount on my barrel.

So i did some digging and found the article. It's missing a bunch of pictures from the electron microscope but the info is all there.

And bollox we may be talking two different kinds of ammo here. Steel core military rifle ammo versus the bi-metal pistol ammo(steel jacket with a thin coating of copper).

not sure if it has been said, but someone came to steel night with this stuff and unfortunately we dont allow it on our steel targets (sparks and flying bits of steel are not great). we did find the guy some different ammo to use but something to keep in mind if you are planning to shoot steel with it

Rather than start a new thread on the same topic, I figured I'd revive this one.

I ran 500 rounds of the MFS ammo through my Glock 17 today doing drills/practice for IDPA. I had no failures of any kind and accuracy was quite sufficient for what I was doing. When I cleaned the gun afterwards, it didn't seem any dirtier than the AE or Winchester (white box and grey box) stuff I have shot prior. The MFS stuff seems like great ammo for the price and I'll definitely be buying more.

I don't know if the barrel wear issue is valid or not, but for a stock pistol I don't have much concern of premature barrel wear. I would research it a little more if I was going to shoot their rifle ammo in a match grade rifle barrel though just in case there is some truth to it.

What about this LVE Savminter Sport 9mm in 115 grain from Russia that I picked up at a gun show cheaply? It says "non-corrosive" on the box but is it going to shoot really filthy as well?
