Good day,

Once again another noob to reloading question.

I'm going to reload 9mm with Bullseye powder and 124gr bulk Winchester fmj's and 124gr Berry bullets. Now just checking some reload data and the Lee and Sierra manuals are confusing me a little bit.

Is a starting charge of 4.2gr of Bullseye powder a good place to start and a max of 4.9gr's?

Thanks so much for the help and patients...I am very excited about reloading and just really want to get it right.

Alliant Reloading website has load data as well.

I might start even a bit lower though.

Just start at the lowest published minimum you can find if you are concerned.

All that said I am not a big fan of Bullsey in 9mm, and might suggest Powerpistol as another cheap alternative. It fills cases pretty good and would leave little room for error, as well as being a little cleaner.
 
I load 4 grains to 4.2 and have shot 100's of thousands with out a hitch...

I also like power pistol but never been able to buy it for $16 a pound...

Its also almost impossible to bouble charge a 9mm when loading 4gr of bullseye as it will be over flowing... :)
 
Ok, so just a couple more questions...

I can't remember, are the Berry bullets fmj's or plated? Does it matter? If I switch to the Berry hollow points do I use the same data?

Lastly, in the Lee manual they don't have a load using Bullseye powder under 124gr bullets but have one under the 125gr bullets...can I use the 125gr data to load 124gr bullets.

I use Bullseye for my 9mm 124 gr. reloads and use 4.3 - 4.6 grains . Have had no problems what so ever with those loads on FMJ and CMJ boolits.
On lead wheel weight boolits I use 4.3 grains Bullseye and have no problem as long as lead boolits are lubed properly.
 
I did load 4.2 grains BE for 124 grain LRN. This load felt hot for me, did not chrono, though.

For range target practice, try 3.5 grains BE. If your pistol cycles, good. It's accurate, easy on the pistol as well.
 
When I loaded some 9mm I used the Lee Dipper with bullseye and worked great. However using Unique with the same dipper and powder charge from the book resulted in a single shot pistol, as they did not have the oomph to rack the slide.

Not all was lost they're great to sneak into a mag and then practice malfunction drills.
 
I reload the 124grain hp in 9mm berrys bullets. only I use clays powder at the moment (3.8grains). When looking at the load data for them you treat them as a lead bullet for load data, since it is a plated bullet higher speeds tend to rip the plating right off of it, not an awesome thing. If your reloading the hp it's got an odd shape to it so make sure you won't have feeding issues with not setting deep enough.

I would favour 231, Unique or HS6 over BE powder for the 9MM. Lots of data available for each. Just use lead bullet data and expect slightly lower velocities.

If you got Universal, this powder works well for me right now.

125 grain Lee TC tumble lube mold (drops at 128-129 grains with my assorted unknown lead alloy) sized .357 over 3.6 grains Universal cycles my Ruger P89s and Glock 17 (yeah I tried shooting about 50 lead bullets inspite of Glock warnings vs lead bullets...still have both hands:D)

Very accurate load and burns clean.
 
I like Clays a lot. But ran out of it, had only 6 lbs.. back to Universal - got 4 lbs left in 8lb canister. Univ. works pretty good with 124gr plated bullets, your powder measure may not like Clays or Universal due to their flakes' shape and size.
