If .380 I’d go with the Hornady XTP ammo. Those bullets seem to perform well vs a lot of other in .380.

Sig P365 in 9mm would be one I'd look at....but I'm pretty die-hard on the Sig.

Ok, so you are asking for a pistol calibre that's good both for you and your wife then I'd go with 9mm. Get your wife some ammo of different bullet weight to see what she handles better.

Although, you are not asking for a specific pistol but it sounds like you both could benefit from the cheapest HK P7 you can find. Cheers!
