9mm or 40 s&w

I have both but if I had to choose only one I would go with the 40 S&W, ammo and reloading components are pretty much equally cheap for both but the 40 has the capability of being more powerful if desired, and really can you have too much power.
Better to have power and penetration and not need it that need it and not have it.

Sig and XD are superb firearms. There really are three most important things in choosing a sidearm:

1. How does it feel and fit your hand.
2. How does it feel and fit your hand.
3. How does it feel and fit your hand!

You get the point. Test drive first, then you will know what is right for you.

I would suggest .40 but I can't fault you for buying a 9mm. I bought a 9mm before .40 existed but I have a .40 now. If you can afford it get one and then the other. If reloading is something that you are into you will be able to shoot both .40 and 9mm cheaply.

+1 on the .40 cal. I have a p226 if you are looking for a sig you wont regret the purchase :) but like other members are saying, find a gun that fits your hand!

I do not currently reload, but I do want to learn how. How long does it take to reload say...50 rounds? Anyway, I do think the .40 is the caliber for me. Like safeguardguy said, "it is better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it" If aliens invade or zombies attack, I may need something to slow them down. Heck, why not just get a .50 S&W!:D

i have an xd buy one you will love it. as for the cal debate there is one advantage for .40 is it almost always knocks down steel in one shot i have seen many 9mm have to shoot it twice

yes this arguement about "cheaper to shoot" and "it will punch through paper" appears moot when you consider then that these people could all shoot .22 handguns. But we don't - we want a good boom! and the satisfaction of knowing, however unlikely it may be, that if all hell breaks loose, we'll be able to do business with the goblins with confidence. You can't stuff 15 rounds legally into your 9mm any more either so a nice compromise does seem to be .40. There is getting to be lots of brass and components around as more and more police adopt this round.
Oh, and I have 2 Sigs, a P229 and P226RDAK.
They are exceptional quality pistols - and I sold my XD to purchase the RDAK with night sights. BRING ON THE HORDES!

If you buy a progressive reloader you should be able to reload at least 400 rounds an hour which would be 8 boxes an hour or one box every 7.5 minutes. There are a few progressive reloaders to choose from, I have a Dillon 550 which I think is great but there are others that work almost as good.;)

So where are the test drives? Aside from being at the mercy of club members. Canada is not "test drive friendly" compared to south of the border!

Go for a .40. This will leave you the option of entering IPSC later on. If cost is a concern beween the 9 MM and .40, then buy a .22LR. If you can't feed it , don't buy it. We all enjoy pride of ownership but it is all about shooting isn't it ??
