9mm or .40s&w

Hello, I've been told that the 9mm is a little light for the reactive targets in IPSC shooting and if I want to get into the sport I'd be better off getting a .40cal glock 22 instead of a glock 17. What does everyone else think? I need a little more than just the opinion of one man before I can justify paying an extra $5 per box on ammo.

i've shot both caliber in IPSC and even with a 115gr the 9mm performed well. so it only comes down to personnel choice. In my case a went with the 40 smith. the big question is are you planning to reload? If so got with the 40.
 
9's got plenty of pop, is cheaper (marginally), and easier on the gun, plus in my experience more accurate. G17's resell easier than G22's. .40 is more versatile and brass is dirt cheap to free if you reload. Fords and Chevs :D That said, I just sold my G17, and kept the G22. Either works :D
 
a) you will not have any issues shooting ipsc with 9mm;

b) should you chose to shoot 9mm vs .40 - that's a personal choice, and will be driven by things like which one feels better for you, which style of guns you like, how much money/time you have to get/make ammo, etc...

Your question was mostly about (a), so you have your answer ;)
 
One thing to remember is that the Pepper popper targets in IPSC have an area that is the calibrated zone of the target. I have seen 9mm hit outside of the area (low) and not knock over the target. The .40's will almost always knock it over unless you hit at the very bottom of the target. If you are accurate, no problems, are you accurate?:p I shoot .40 so that tells you how accurate I am. As far as the "B" zones are concerned, no difference.
 
I don't have the equipment or the room to reload shells.
Never shot a .40 , only shot the 9mm Glock17.
New to the sport, not that accurate yet.
And don't know what division.
Just wanted to make an informed decision about pistol size before I went shopping. I'm on a budget and want to buy a pistol that would be good for competition at the entry level so I don't have to buy a second one right away. Thanks for all the input. I think I'm leaning towards the glock 17.

get a 9mm.......
 
go with a .45, bullets so fat, you'll hit something, that otherwise you may of missed ;) :p
if you've shot a g17 & you like how it felt in your hand & how it shot, than go for it, it's a good gun & you can shoot it in production or even modify it and shoot standard, if so desired.
there are cheaper guns, but it can't be beat for the buck.
