9mm or 45ACP vs 40S&W

For me I bought a 45 and a 9mm and feel as 40 is just a waste of money.. The only way I could see myself shooting 40 is if I got my hands on a conversion for cheap that works on a gun I already own.. And of course stopping power doesn't matter as a small rock thrown will stop a paper zombie.. The only thing I can think of being positive about the 40 is that most places always have PD rounds for 40 in stock ... You know to stop those tougher cardboard zombies.

Again this is just my opinion I'm sure someone who will think the 40 is the best thing since sliced bread. I'm not saying it has poor preformance I just don't feel it does any more than a 9

Honestly I think the only reason to get the .40 (assuming you already have 9mm and .45) is if you are getting it to practice with an issued gun for work. I know some cops and sheriffs that went out and bought Glock 22's just so they could practice with the same issued firearm. Or if you've got lots of money then go ahead and pick it up just because (or better yet, buy one for me ;) haha)

If I were to do it again I would have just bought a 9 and a 45 - I love my .40 P226, but for punching paper, what the heck right? The only reason I haven't gone to a 9mm P226, or a P220 is because I have so much .40 cal reloading gear now, I may as well use it.
As for which is better, lol, don't start, I think there are battle threads out there regarding which is better.

Well I love my .40 M&P. I don't think it's particularly better than a 9 or a .45, though it definitely packs more punch than a 9, and is still a fair bit cheaper than .45. 9mm ammo prices are rather alluring, though I can always find bulk 40 cal fmj for pretty cheap as well where I'm at. Lots of hollowpoints available too. But if budget is a priority, I'd say stick with the 9. I just think the 40 is more fun :)

I have both 45 and 9mm. I thought about getting a 40, but since almost all guns chambered in 40 are also offered in 9mm I don't see the point in the extra caliber. That said, if I got a really good deal or a specific gun caught my eye, well you know how it goes:evil:

40 cal can put you in major power factor and 9 cannot. Just putting holes in paper I would use a 9mm. Competition the 40 has its place

Like most mentioned, i have 9&45 and see no need for 40. Although once my new gen 4 glock 20 comes in i may add the 40 conversion barrel to it because 10mm brass is often hard to come by. I reload all my own ammo so ammo prices/ availibility never concerns me

I read all the debates over what is best when I first started and would just love to have some of the bigger calibres, but being I'm cheap and don't expect to shoot more than 5,000 rounds a year, I shoot 22 LR as well it just didn't make sense to me.

Now if I was rich it would be a different matter, I'm happy with my 9mm's and 22 LR firearms.

I still look with envy though at you folks who have and shoot more calibres though.

The only reason I bought my Glock 22 was I couldn't find a 17 at the time and I knew I could get a conversion barrel later. Most of us don't buy based on what's most economical I think. We buy because we want it. If all we were worried about is what's most economical for punching paper we would only be shooting .22. Get whatever catches your fancy, shoot it and if you don't like it sell it.

Cheers

I think Canadians do consider the cost more than other folks , why do you think 9mm is so popular ??

I like my 40 better than my 9 & 45, it just works out. Sure it is a little more than 9 but extra money is worth it for me, if I want to shoot cheap I'll use my 22. My friend loads for me as well and its cheaper due to 2 police departments shooting at my club and they re lazy (unlimited brass). It will be even cheaper when I start reloading

I like 45 acp for 2 reasons.

I can see the holes on paper allot easier.

It can knock steel plates over fun as heck to watch them flop over with 9mm its allot harder you have to hit it just right 45 it just goes bang timber!

When it comes to cost I look at it this way how much ammo will I shoot in 1 trip times how much to buy... Then I said screw it I want even more then that time to reload so I just reload 45acp and 308 rifle thats what I shoot the most thats what I reload in bulk everything else I could reload I just don't bother to because I don't shoot it as much 9mm I just buy cheapo ammo and blast away. The amount of time to reload 9mm it wasn't worth the cost its cheaper for me to just buy the ammo in a crate. Just buy bulk ammo in crates its cheaper overtime because you save per box 2-5 bucks per box. Think of it this way how much do I shoot how often what do I like to shoot how much time do I really got to spend at the range all that comes into factor I have lots of firearms and lots of calibers to shoot but its to much of a pain in the rear to lug every single firearm out because I just don't have enough time to shoot them all in 1 day.

I have all 3, as well as 50AE and 22LR. I didn't buy them because of the caliber but because of how cool I find the guns. The M&P40 was my first gun and it's the local PD issue, so I found that awesome. Then I wanted a 92FS, the only legit Beretta, so it's a 9. The Desert Eagle is an obvious one. The 1911 has to be 45ACP... except then Questar had their Christmas sale, and when I looked at 22 prices, I realized I had to have one for how many rounds I like chewing through.

They all feel different and I like them all, no interest in ditching any of them. I also reload them all, except 22. One benefit is that if I come across a deal, like someone unloading a pile of 40S&W on EE, or Norinco 45, or a bulk pack 9... I can make use of it, rather than watch out for one caliber.
