I picked up some of this ammo on the weekend and tried it out on Sunday:

Here is a the +P hollowpoint (on the left) sitting next to the regular Remington 115gr. hollowpoint:

In trying the +P ammo out, I came to this conclusion: THIS STUFF IS FUN!! :D

The difference is a bit like the difference between a normal .22LR round and a CCI Stinger. The +P 9mm is louder, more kick, and more muzzle flash. I also found the rounds to be pretty damn accurate. I shot them through a USP, a Glock 17 and a Steyr M9-A1.

The only downside is that they are $24.99 for 50  , double what I normally pay for 9mm.

I've got to make sure I have some of these for our range's pumkin shoot in the Fall, so I can see what they can really do (and what they were designed for).

A couple of questions I have:

How fast do these rounds travel compared to standard 9mm loads. Any good places on the net that compare data. I should go check the Remington website I guess  .

If you look at the picture of the +P next to the standard 115gr. hollowpoint... is the bullet on the +P longer, or is it just sitting higher in the casing? The size of the hole in each bullet seems to be about the same. The length of the +P round seems to be the absolute maximum that will work in the guns.

The "cuts" in the sides of the bullet are much more pronounced on the +P. Does it expand more than the standard JHP?

And... just for fun... is this "cop-style ammo"? Don't post what any particular police department issues, or the mods will shut the thread down (as happened in the precision rifles thread), but in general, is this the kind of thing cops use, or do they use a 147gr. +P hollowpoint (if the deparment issues 9mm pistols).

Has anyone ever come across (+P+) ammo in a shop or online in Canada? Are our regular stock guns built for +P+? Seems like basically every gun is rated for at least +P these days, but what about the next step?

9mm +P

I guess you could always measure the COAL to see if there is a difference. I presume if it fits inside your mag and chambers well, it must be within allowable dimensions.

Faster speeds are usually obtained by manufacturers by the use of a lighter bullet weight and special propellants. I doubt you could duplicate the load even with the right bullet available.

You got to love shooting to pay those prices !!

If we were allowed (?!) to carry (Qc.,Canada) I'm sure it would make a great personal defense load.

I am surprised to see the OAL of these cartridges so much longer...but if they feed OK, then that's fine.

I'm sure they are lots of fun to shoot! :) I'll have to see if any of my local shops have them - I'd like to give them a try myself.

$24.00 a box is not that bad for "specialty" ammunition like this - I've seen some 9mm Personal Defense style loads for sale at $40 a box lately!

Thanks for the excellent pictures of this ammunition. ;)

Jeff/1911.

The Glock is rated for 9mm NATO, so +P+ is no problem. Probably also the USP. I used CorBon +P+ in my 19 & 26 with no issues at all. It's a bit noisier though... And way to expensive to use for "general" shooting!

+P or +P+ related to +Pressure loads.

They are loaded above cartridge spec for a bigger bang and a fast bullet.

That +p load is 115gr @1250fps, 399ft-lbs,
regular Rem. 115gr MC is 1135fps (329ft-lbs).

If you reload you can load just as hot yourself...

Here are some pics showing the difference between the 115gr. +P hollowponts and the the 115gr. "Metal Case" rounds sitting in magazines:

In USP mags:

In Glock mags:

The Glock mags seem to have a bit more room, but the +P hollowpoints work fine in both guns.

Ditto? I haven't seen any hollow point in Toronto or the GTA....guess they're afraid of it getting into the wrong hands?

You will likely notice little difference when shooting pumpkins.

Who carries these on Vancouver Island?

All I have been able to find for my 9mm these days is the Fiocchi stuff, and even then I got the last over-priced box at Pullens last weekend. :(

Sorry - I don't believe I've seen them in Canada yet (although I believe a saw a mention somewhere about a dealer bringing in CorBon - will have to search again...). Still stock I bought in Southern Africa. Isn't it an irony - easier to find US CorBon ammo in Africa than in Canada!

Easiest would be to load your own. Just use a chronograph and slowly work the loads up to around 600-615 m/s. And check for signs of over pressure on the casings & primers every step! (General disclaimer: reloading outside the standard tables are done at your own risk and can be dangerous!!)

From Remingtons site....all of their 9mm.......

Both the standard and the +P hollowpoints are from Reliable Gun & Tackle in Vancouver. They always have the regular 115gr. hollow points on hand. I believe they are $14.99 for 50 or (you guessed it) $149.99 for 500. The +P hollow points are something that they don't normally have. They are $24.99 for 50 which obviously makes them good only for a special occasion.

I don't really agree with this, but who knows, experiences may vary with these things. At last year's pumpkin shoot all my girlfriend and I had to hit them with was .223, .22LR, 9mm ball, and the regular 115gr. Remington 9mm hollowpoints. Everything except the hollows just tended to penetrate right through, producing only a mild "pumpkin spritz", especially the .223 and .22LR. The 9mm hollows were sawing some good quarter-sized channels through the hard parts of the pumpkins (like, if you hit it on the top or the extreme side) and were blowing out the backs of them if you hit it in the middle. Still though, nothing compared to what was being done by all the tactical shotguns that came out of the woodwork for that shoot. Total one-shot pumpkin annihilation. I've got to make sure I have a shotgun on hand for this year's shoot, and maybe something that will shoot .45ACP hollows.

Well I don't know if it is a rule, but I do know that a very interesting thread in the precision rifles section ("What kind of sniper rifle does your local PD use") was shut down and disappeared due "operational safety concerns" or something like that.

That's interesting, the "feel" of the round, the muzzle flash, etc. gives a person the idea that it would be more... but I guess not.

I won't name names; but I know of one major ammunition distributor that won't sell hollow point pistol ammo to licensed dealers - only to LE.:(
