In every reloading book I own, it states the primer size needed for the case. For 9mm -> small pistol primer.

I did a taste test.

Small pistol/rifle primer diameter is 0.175" and large pistol/rifle primer diameter is 0.210" (e.g., see http://www.exteriorballistics.com/reloadbasics/primer.cfm).

If you measure the cup on your casing you'll be able to see the difference.
