9mm Powder Recommendations... Let's Hear Them!

If you can't find "pistol powder" - as was the case a few years ago - there are some loads that work well using Blue Dot. Crimp becomes very important with Blue Dot - tighter than you normally crimp works better.

I have found shotgun powders like Blue Dot and Longshot to work very well in 9mm. The best velocities I've ever gotten with 147grn were using Longshot.

It's not an easy powder to find but I have had excellent results with Accurate #2 in both of my CZ 75 Tactical Sports, My PSA 10 1/2" 9mm AR and just about every other 9mm I have. I'm pushing Lee 125 gr. RN lead and PC bullets with loads running from 3.1-3.9 gr. depending on what I'm using them for (3.9 really knocks down the bowling pins). It ultra fine granular so it meters exceptionally well and is not terribly dirty.

Thank you all for the replies so far, some great info.

Really...I need to calculate better then as all info I have shows over published load max with 231 and 124gr to hit 125 PF. Thanks for the post.

Can you school me on PF? Admittedly I have no clue on what it is or what I will "need". I figure if I'm going to practice for IPSC shooting; I might as well make sure my ammo is up to spec.

Power factor = (bullet weight x velocity)/1000

For IPSC:
Minor = 125
Major Open = 160
Major Standard/Classic/Revolver - 170

What Trinimon said....

So you need to load to measured ~1009 fps with your 124 grains to get PF of 125 (for Minor).

And build some buffer room for velocity for your powder hopper's +/- variance, air temp and chrony variances during reloading. Would hate to show up at a L3 where my ammo made exactly 124PF at the home range on a hot, sunny day only to be shooting on an unusually cool day and the range's chrony is less generous than my own. :p

I started with N320 which metered nice and was clean, consistent. It was a bit pricey but I stuck with it until I couldn't find any. Switched to HS6 (4.7gr with 147gr RNFP CAMPRO) and have been happy. It gives me a 130PF out of my G17.

That's the exact load I'm using with my 147gr. cast PC bullets. Gives me 129PF.

and beware of the powders that are reverse temperature sensitive. As the temp increases, the velocity decreases.

It's one reason why I don't typically load below 130 PF now.

No clue - light crimp seems to not fully burn, dial it up a little and it's very clean, full burn.

Not doubting you....but I constantly hear the opposite. That 9mm should have a very light taper crimp, especially if loading copper plated bullets

Has anyone tried WST?

I have about 7 lbs left that I would like to use up. I got it for shotgun when I couldn't get Clays, but Clays became available and I prefer it.
A friend of mine who is a long time bullseye & PPC shooter swears by WST in his 45s. I'm guessing it would also be well suited to 9mm.

I've had good luck with Win231/HP-38 and Bullseye. I tried 800-X, but it meters very poorly.

If anybody is curious, I did a quick tally of the powders and votes they received to this point:

Win231/HP-38: 9
Titegroup: 7
CFE Pistol: 6
VV N320: 4
Unique: 4
VV N340: 2
WSF: 2
Blue Dot: 2
Bullseye: 2
HS-6: 1
Universal: 1
700-X: 1
