9mm Powders

I'm currently shooting both titegroup and WSF and i like titegroup better (not as snappy) tho WSF isnt all that snappy.
neither seem dirty to me
If your primarily looking for a powder that will fill the case more WSF will defiantly do that for you (cant double charge without overflowing the case).

What about winchester 231/HP38 (I read that they are the same thing). Has anyone used that for 9mm? Does it burn clean? Fill the case?

In case no-one else has given input on this question I'd like to throw my 2 cents worth in. I was using 231 primarily as I was also using it for my .45. It doesn't fill the case very much though and as you pointed out, there is the possibility of an overcharge. It is fairly clean burning but it also leaves that mark you mentioned around the top of the case. Cheap man's solution to that if you don't have a tumble cleaner is to wash the cases in hot water and detergent for a minute, rinse, then soak in Coca-cola for 24 hours then rinse well. Should be a lot shinier. Maybe not perfect but better than nothing.

For powder I switched to IMR 700X and it seems to be a bulkier powder so it fills the case more. Accuracy doesn't seem to have changed so you may want to give it a try.
Cheers.

Cool thanks. I have also been giving some thought to WSF. Seems to fill cases and be fairly clean and accurate for 9mm...

That's a new one - perhaps Mentos and Coke whilst listening to the Foo Fighters? :D:D:D

Seriously - I use Universal - clean burning - flake powder - but it seems it meter well through my 550B...

Here's what I load -> 4.7 Universal under 124gr CamPro - subject to change do to component availability...

Wow! I must be living on the outskirts of town compared to what most are using, lol.
I only use Bluedot and Longshot. Have tried many but ended up with those two powders in the end.

I found that my 700x always metered pretty good. Not as accurate as ball powders but accurate enough for 9mm pistol loads. I'm using an el cheapo Lee powder dispenser with the 4 hole Turret press for 9mm. Maybe it's my uber sophisticated set-up that makes the metering good....:D.

I am currently using win231 with campro bullets. Accuracy is good enough and it is clean enough for me. 9mm is not my favorite caliber at all and for some reason the most inaccurate caliber I have ever shot ( Atleast for me)

Most people's mistakes with this caliber are over-sizing and over-crimping. Because of the taper of the 9mm case, it is a lot easier to do this than it is in other calibers. Size only as much as is needed to feed reliably (and hold the bullet) and only adjust the crimp die down enough to remove the flare the expander causes. If you're marking the bullet it's too much.

Yeah I would have to load an obscene amount for that to really matter.

That said - how do you guys find VV320 with respect to how well it fills the case? One of my issues with the Titegroup is that it is so compact and takes so little space. Does the 320 take up a little more volume in the case?

It takes up a lot more room than TG. On a 4.0 gr. load, a double-charge will fill the case to the mouth.

aside from Vhit.n320, you also try Vhit.n340, this will fill up the case better than n320. if thats what your looking for

I happen to like 231. Its realitively cheap - easy to find and in 9mm and 40 loads at the higher end it burns pretty clean. It is smokey and dirty though with reduced loads. I find it accurate in almost every caliber i have tried it in and it meters very well in my dillon.

Hey folks. I have been loading 9mm with Titegroup (for a G17 and G34) and it is decent. The pistols function well enough with it.

That said, I was thinking of trying something else and I am looking for some recommendations. I am finding that the Titegroup leaves some good burn marks on the outside of fired cases that are hard to clean off. It also doesn't take up too much space in the case, which makes an overcharge easier.

I am not trying to make major or anything here. I am just looking for a powder that will meter well in a Dillon measure (something spherical I suppose) that burns fairly clean, will function the gun well, will fill the case well and produces accurate 9mm bullets (I am loading 124g zero JHP's at the moment).

Do any of you more experience reloaders have some recommendations? Thanks!
I started with Blue Dot, then moved to Unique, and now I'm on to Bullseye at 4.0g. I haven't fired the Bullseye yet but I've hear good things about it. I too load with a Dillon RL550B and the Bullseye powder is small and spherical. It's consistently dropping 4.0g for my 124g CMJ Montana Golds. Hope that helps.

I know a lot of people aren't big fans of it but I'm really enjoying bullseye. Fills the case right up.
Bullseye should definitely not be filling up a 9mm casing. The loads according to Speer are between 3.9 and 4.6 grains. That fills the case to about half or just under. If you are filling the case up any more than that you are running way too hot of a load and are going to do some damage to your pistol and possibly yourself. Be Careful.

Iseager,
I didn't articulate my point very well. My loads with Bullseye fill the case enough that a double charge with overflow the case.
According to the Lee manual you can go up to 4.9gr's. My loads are at 4.7gr and for "learning purposes" I have intentionally double charged a case and it does overflow it.

Thank you for catching my mistake. I agree with you, a full case of Bullseye would be very dangerous! Good catch!
Cheers

I wish manuals were a bit more uniform. One book's max charge is a minimum in another book. Scary how off they can be sometimes. I think it's the Hornady book that is very reserved in their charges. Your response makes more sense now. Just didn't want to see anyone lose a hand or damage their pistol.

Take care.
