9mm Primer Choice

Hi All,

I was using Federial 100's and 231 powder and want to try another recipe
using tight group and was wondering which primers most of you are using.

I've been using S&B (available from site sponsor SFRC) for the last 4 years with no issues. They actually feed through my auto primer filler better than the WSP's

I use CCI small pistol primers with W231 for my 9mm and .38S&W. Some claim they're too hard, but I've never had any issues making them go bang.

With few exceptions, I almost always use Winchester's large and small pistol primers. For all auto applications and most revolver scenarios, they work fine and are priced decently.
For my PPC loads in my SuperGun, in 38special, I ALWAYS use Federal small pistol primers.

As you can see, it makes no difference. The primer will have little to no effect on your loads. I use whatever I can find.

I find the federial's work best for my ppc pistol as well, even then sometimes the strike is not hard enough. I just finished useing a cleaned out primer as a shim, hope it helps out

btw, What is your load data for the 38?

Im using 3.3 gr of 231 and 148gr BDX HBWC

I use CCI primers for 9mm. I have had no problems. I have heard that federals are better if you have a light primer strike with your gun though.

I've used both CCI and Federal. 1000s of loads of each.. Never could tell a difference. Both worked well.

ive always liked either cci or winchester never had a problem with either i stay away from federal because i have had a few ftf using them which may have just been 1 bad batch but ive had no reason to give them another try

CCI, Federal, Winchester, Fiocci. Can't tell a difference. Powder goes "bang" before I can tell what the primer is doing!

For the most part, primers are primers, unless you have an action job that requires Federal primers. Buy whatever you can get for the best price. The only bad experience I have had with primers is poor accuracy and keyholing with PMC lead-free primers in 9mm.

I had that same problem with a batch of Federals. Funny it was a batch of 200 or 300 from the same box of a 1000. I rechecked my loads and all the other rounds where fine. I use titegroup and the rounds from that batch of powder where also fine except for the 200 or 300 so rounds. The bullets where 124 gr FMJ round nose frontiers Mixed brass ..

I cannot say for sure if it was the primers.. but I check my rounds every 10 or so for powder weight and OAL. Nothing like that ever happened since but I am with CCI right now

the only brand I *avoid* is federal, because I hate the packaging. My reloading cabinet is already plenty full, without having to dedicate stupid amounts of space to store federal primers with their ridiculously over-sized boxes.

Generally speaking, my 'go to' primers are Winchester, then CCI, then Remington - in approximately that order of preference. There's not really a significant difference between them
