9mm reloading question

Yes, don't worry about compressed loads until it interferes with seating the projectile to the desired length. Don't trust me? That's fine, I understand, lol, so read this:

I figured it was an M&P. I should have guessed, it would have been more impressive, lol. Have you actually fired some rounds? Or have you only played with dummy rounds at home? 1.169 is looooooooooong and I'm a little surprised that you're not having any feeding issues. Regardless, there is no need to load at max length, especially since your press will likely produce ammo that will vary in OAL +/- .005".

Thanks for the link, it is appreciated!

I am making small runs of 20rounds right now to determine the best load for it... I will shoot some tomorrow, but actually I load mags and cycle the action manually and everything works fine so far. I'm starting with powder/bullets and will then play more with seating later.

Let us know how it goes tomorrow but I think you may have feeding issues. For some reason you seem reluctant to shorten the length. What OAL did you get using the push test I posted above? I wouldn't load another round if you haven't measured the max OAL for that barrel/projectile combo.

Stop guessing, start measuring, post some numbers...

1.169 would fail a plunk test in a LOT of guns. I load to 1.090 because it's what works in all of my guns, but I've sometimes gone as low as 1.055, because of the shape of a dummy brand of bullets. With the same powder charge. I think an 1.06 OAL is made to fit in every possible 9mm chamber, including the tight CZs and tanfos.

OP: do what h2tn0 says. Measure you max OAL, then back off a bit, then you get the OAL for your gun. Then go for low powder charge, and if you have a chrony (honestly, every reloader should get a chrony, it's 100$ for a basic model...), you can get more fancy. If you don't have a chrony, either buy one, borrow one, or don't charge up too much.

Don't worry too much about OAL as long as it's short enough to cycle well in all your guns and long enough not to blow up the planet.

I loaded using 3bullets type, and 3 powder. Following this discussion, I've re-seated the XTP bullets.

RN Metal jacket: 1.150
Synthetic jacket: 1.160
HP XTP: 1.155

Maths have been done to have the bullets seated to have about the same space for the powder. Every bullet type has been tested for plunk test as indicated and worked.

I had no feeding issues so far, except for low charges as expected.

As for my pistol chamber, it safely allows 1.169... so far it is my only 9mm, so I accept the fact I may need to play more later when I buy a new one if I wish to use the same load in any handgun...

Now I have determined what charge will cycle or not, what is too hot, I will remake "acceptable" batches with variation of COL just for the fun of the experience.

Thanks everyone for your comments! :)
