Hi guys I am thinking of a charter arms pitbull 5 inch with adj. sights OR a 4.5 inch alfa proj, both in 9mm, which one? any thoughts?

I had a 4.5" Alfa proj. it was a decent enough gun for the price and I never had any issues with it. I don't have any first hand experience with Charter Arms but I do know (FWIW) that their reputation isn't the best.

edit.....not a big deal but it's "Alfa" not "Alpha" and just "proj" not short for "project"....might make a difference if you are google searching for reviews etc.

There are a bunch of past review threads about the Alfa 9mm. Run a "Search" but be sure to change the default setting for the time frame from "and newer" to "and older". That'll turn them up.

It's not a cop out. There are a bunch of threads and we'd just be repeating ourselves to type it all over again. It's worth coming to grips with the Search default settings to find them.

I own a Charter Arms Pitbull 5" stainless.
Great gun, just wish we had a speedloader available I'd get much more use out of it if we did.

Quite accurate with 147gr handloads, plenty accurate with 124. I don't shoot 115 so cannot comment.
Have put around 300-500 rounds through mine.

Had a rear sight come loose and dissappear, Charter Arms sent me replacement parts as soon as I called them and were fantastic to deal with. Don't believe everything you read on the interwebz.

Does it headspace off of the rim of 9mm cartridge? How does the ejection work?

Yes headspace would be set by ejector star.
It uses spring loaded pieces in ejector to lock into rim of brass to keep in gun and to push the cartridge out when ejected.

Lots of info out there on them. With lots of users saying the design doesn't work etc. After an initial break in and cleaning mine has been running flawlessly for hundreds of various rounds.

The old and long out of production S&W 9mm used the springs that lock into the ejector grooves as well.

I have a Charter Arms in 9mm. It's a fun plinker, DA not near as nice as a S&W, SA is okay. I find I have to keep it clean to cycle properly, when dirty the cylinder catches. Not a big deal if you're cleaning regularly. It is nice to not worry about moon clips.

The alfa proj in 9mm requires moon clips for ejecting. Otherwise you might have to poke the empty cases out of the cylinder. If this is a deal breaker the charter might be the better option.

Moon clips are like cheap speed loaders, so if you like to reload quickly the alfa is probably the better choice.

Spring kits exist for the alfa to make the DA trigger better. No idea if the same exists for the charter.

I've shot the Alpha and it was fine, though I'd really like a S&W 929. I hear the moonclips are hard (impossible) to find.

I may be misreading your statement but for clarification the extractor segments on the S&W 547 are for extraction only; there is a step inside the cylinder bore for head spacing on the case mouth.
