maybe for steel challenge, maybe not,

mostly for paper IPSC targets but I might buy some gongs,

so if I decide to go to a steel challenge match or use gongs which bullet type do I need,

assuming 124 grain for 9mm

Jeff (campro bdx western munitions who the heck knows I am not sure what to do) that is why I ask

just shoot FMJ for everything

HP is 1$ a round you will go broke

no one shoots HP ammo when range time or steel sgooting its a waste of money

HP ammo is defensive ammunition or (hunting ammo)

Plated round nose or bulk fmj seem like the best compromise of cost, accuracy and ease of loading and cleaning for most people.

Cast is a bit cheaper but can be more mess or time consuming. Brand name hp etc might be more accurate but how many handgunners will ever shoot well enough to tell Terrminal performance consideration is generally outside the scope of legal sanctioned use of pistols in this country.

I've cast for 9mm in the past (and nearly everything I shoot I still do) but for my modest volumes I've gone back to campro or BDX.

if you are just shooting steel challenge or plinking and don't need to worry about making power factor, then a light load with 124gr Campro hollow points are great. When I stocked up on them, they were selling for the same cost as 124gr round nose, and I find the hollow points gave me slightly better grouping.

What are you going to be shooting? I developed a 3.1gr N320 under 124gr Campro HP load that gave me a nice 900fps out of a CZ SP01 Shadow. It's very accurate, but I did have to switch to a lower recoil spring so the slide would function reliably. I like my spend casings to eject ~5-10 feet away. Less than that I run the risk of a stovepipe FTE. More than that and I may be battering my slide against the stop.

If you are shooting revolver, you have a lot more flexibility as you don't need to worry about cycling a slide. I worked up a nice 3.0gr Titegroup under a 100gr Berry's .380 bullet that gives me 850 fps out of my S&W 929. The recoil is not much more than a .22, and .380 bullets are cheap too :)

There are lighter recoil springs available for 1911's as well. I keep a Colt 1911 (9mm) and my Shadow set up for the 3.1gr N320 / 124gr Campro HP that I shoot LEAP with. I just use different coloured labels on my baggies of reloads to avoid running my IPSC Production loads through them.
