I'm not a 1911 guy so I don't even know where to start on this, but I'm looking into the prices for a decent (not expensive) 9mm single stack 1911.

I'm an IPSC shooter and currently compete in the Production division, but thought I'd try my hand in Classic if I can find a decently priced gun. The rules state that the gun must be of the 1911 genre, no extended dust covers, no rails, single stack, etc. So no fancy shmancy stuff.

The gun can either be chambered in .40, .45 or 9mm. Guns chambered in 9mm can use 10 round mags while all others must use 8. (they get more points per shot to make up for it - it may sound silly to non-IPSC shooters but it works out quite nicely in the end)

I prefer the look of the Commander length guns so that's what I'd prefer.

So... where do I start and more importantly, who has them in stock?

Thanks in advance for the help guys!

Freedom Ventures has STI Spartan IV in 9mm....would be my pick.

STI 1911 are well built. I used to have a ranger ii but the true commander dimensions/build of the Spartan iv would be better.
I also like 9mm in 1911's. My personal favorite is the CCO version...commander slide/barrel, officer sized frame...8 round magazines, but can also take 10 round ones too.

That's what I thought was gonna happen. Sticker shock. :( Nice looking guns though.

I don't suppose the Norinco NP29 would be a good option for me. :p

I hear they don't like to lock back on the last shot.

Wolverine Supplies (site sponsor) shows about 5 different models of Shooters Arms Mfg. 1911s in 9mm. Prices range from low $500s to mid $600s. They are very well made guns for the money (probably the best combination of fit, finish & quality vs. cost).

i would highly recommend you borrow one and shoot it to compare it to the full size. commanders have their use I'm sure but classic division isn't one of them.

ps: 45 in classic is akin to tossing telephone pole, painfully slow

Sam 1911 9mm commander I cant recomend them enough! Same quality you would find on a $1000+ gun for around $500ish
Here's my wifes

Ohhhh... I like that...

"mshundal", what makes the full sized a better option in your opinion?

sight radius, recoil control, slide cycling (or at least the ability to tune it for your speed)

when your fighting for fractions of a second, ability to aim faster and easier, pulling the trigger and front sight remaining almost stable vertically all help enormously.

Ohhh... ha ha ha! You assumed I was a competitive shooter... LOL! Not the case. I play because it's fun and I get to use my pistols for something other than bullseye at 10 meters. :)

There's no way I'll get into tuning the gun for performance. As for sight radius, I currently shoot a Ruger SR9 which I think has the shortest sight radius of any production legal gun. LOL! I do pretty well with it though, I finished 39th out of 101 shooters in my division (with 214 Alphas out of a possible 282) at the Nationals this year. Hardly anything to brag about but I'm happy with it.

if you want to pick the best gun for the division its a government size gun, however if you don't really care all that much about maximizing every little bit of advantage and just want to use a gun you like, commander size isn't going to hurt you all that much.

I say buy the Spartan (either size) mine hasn't hurt me from coming near the top of the matches I shoot and I'm past 15k rounds with only a few issues (one part needed replacing and I got some work done to the trigger simply because I'm picky). SAM guns might be good but I don't have experience with them and no one else I shoot with does either. I may buy one in .40 to use as my classic major gun but haven't decided yet

I do like the STI Spartan but to be honest, the SAM is just barely within my grasp pricewise.

So say I do move forward with this, what are my best options for magazines? The only one's I've found so far are Norinco 9 round mags. Do I need to buy +1 baseplates or are there mags out there that hold 10?

I handled a stainless SAM enhanced Commander in 9 mm the other day - it was a VERY impressive pistol in every way. Nice and tight, good sights, good trigger, positive safety- really nothing wrong with the gun at all, and the price is truly excellent considering the quality. Even the mags seemed decent. This was the first SAM gun I've handled, and I was truly impressed. Check mag prices with Wolverine (they import the SAM guns, so mags should be available) - as well as Freedom Ventures, for STI 9 mm mags. Beyond that take a look at Brownells, for the really racy stuff.

I like the full size 1911 frame and commander slide combo (I have an STI Ranger II in 9mm and love it). It fits well in my hand, is quick pointing and accurate. Compete with the gun you want and enjoy or compete with the best gun for the division; if its the same gun, bonus.

IMO the only real option for mags are the tripp research 10 rounders (with metal base pads if you don't have a separate set of mags for match and practice, plastic breaks) and NR magazine on here carries those

plastic works fine but you have to make sure you have spares. I'd hate to be practicing on Thursday or Friday with a match that weekend and during practice you drop a mag and the basepad breaks if I didn't have a bunch of spares (mags or basepads) kicking around.

I run a separate set of crappy mags for practice and keep my good set for matches personally.

So hold on, the Commander and Government frames are different? I thought the Commander just had a shorter slide and barrel. Does the Commander have a shorter grip as well? And are there any other key differences that I should consider?

Thanks for the info on the mags BTW. You guys are all being a great help so far. :)

ETA - sorry, who is NR?
