Hey, i was wondering if people here owning this firearm like it?
Using for ipsc classic? What kind of grouping to expect?
Has a shorter sight radius but has a bull barrel, so that might compensate if shooter is competent.

Just a review in general with pictures if you feel like sharing!

I had a 9mm Ranger 2 and it was nice to shoot. STI quality. Also has bull barrel too, not sure what class IPSC it would fall in, but it's fine for IDPA. If you just practice and get good at shooting, it will be as accurate as you. Reload your own ammo for tighter groups.
I seen some nice ones on the EE for under $1K.

Right now im production division, with 24k round count experience.
Yeah reloading is a must, loading 128pf ammo thru my shadow.
It would fall in the classic division
What round count did you bring it up to?

Love mine. STI quality, tack driver, the steel frame and bull barrel keep the nose down making it fast, and it just feels slick with the shorter slide/barrel. Plus it looks good! Depending what you shoot out of it, with the fixed sights you may need to replace the front sight, but no biggie.

I use mine for IDPA and i love it. I had an issues with failure to extract but fix it with and aftec extractor. Only other issue i have with it the finish. it is absolute garbage, It is coming off on any contact point on the frame. Bevertail, front strap, slide, trigger guard. I don't mind the finish coming off as much as the smell. Your hands smell like you just handled pocket change all day. Sine the new extractor i'm about 2k in with zero issues.

As for accuracy, I don't think i will be able to out shoot it anytime soon. At 10 meters you should't have any issues stacking rounds with the stock black sights.

Thanks for the pics vinn dihn, i have to admit that with the STI quality and price point, it's a bit of a let down to have the finish wear off like it does.
Might be a good excuse to use it for 2 seasons, then go to a smith and get it retightened via hard chrome, and hard chrome plate exterior looks while at it ;)
We'll see, it just seems like an acceptable price point for me to switch for production to classic
Oh kellys boys, front sight would definatly get changed for a dawson F/O with 1mm blade, if i should go with this platform

That's exactly what I'm planing to do, I just have to find someone that will hard chrome my gun. :)

I guess your club doesn't enforce the rules. Oversize mag release buttons are not allowed in IDPA as per rule 8.2.2.3.3. (for ESP) and 8.2.3.3.3 (for CDP) of the current rule book.

Yeah, lots of unsanctioned matches. Just out their to have a good time with the guys.

Duly Noted, thank.

Let's not hi-jack this man thread with rules and regulations.

We have a man thinking here ;)
If we are going to side track a bit, come and try ipsc, rules are focused on shooting instead of hiding!

Back on thread, did you use reloads or factory?
I am assuming you have the sti recoil master system, i am unfamiliar with this. Is it compatible with regular 1911 recoil springs?
The Sti from factory should be set for factory power ammo, but i will be using my 128PF ammo, so the recoil spring will have to be tuned down to get this cycling right.
This is in the scenario i should sell the shadow and go classic (1911 single stack)

I use a combination of factory and reloaded ammo. For factory i ran a bunch of different brands from 115-147 gr with no issues. I personally don't do my own reloads. I buy reloaded ammunition from "Canadian BDX" i'm not sure what he loads his PF to but on the box its says "IPSC Minor" or "Production"

IMHO I like the duel spring system on the Recoil Master, I personally think that the impulse from the gun is slightly softer and less snappy. I've only put a couple hundred rounds down range with FLGR and decided to switch back. If you wanted to put a FLGR in a Ranger, you will need to custom make one. I wasn't able to find one dedicated for the Ranger II, I bought one from Wilson combat and chopped it down and it seems to work fine. I threw a 12# commander length wolf spring on it. If you do decide to run a FLGR the reverse plug from the recoil master will work just fine on it.

I have a STI Ranger ll in 40S&W and absolutely love it!

You can use yours for Classic or Standard, but in 9mm, you're shooting minor.
As for groups, that's up to you. The "shorter sight radius" is a whopping 3/4" shorter. That's it. If that kills your groups......I dunno.....?

I threw a pair of VZ Operator 2 grips on mine and I love the way it feels and handles in my hands. Don't shoot it near enough to be competitive outside of our action league, but I doubt I'll part with it too soon.

(E)

I concur 100%. I have a Ranger 9MM which I bought used but it was in "as new" condition. It has an Armco trigger job which makes for a great trigger pull. The gun is a pleasure to shoot and extremely accurate. Normally I shoot my Kimber Stainless Target II 45 in PPC service pistol but just for sh!ts & giggles I shot a few rounds with the STI. I didn't holster the gun 20 times total and already I could see the finish starting to scuff off.

It's pretty discouraging to have a gun that is well built, accurate and with a great trigger and have the finish look like crap. And they aren't cheap, running in the $1100-1200 range so I really expected better finish wise.

I really wish STI would come out with a line of stainless guns to overcome this problem. I also have a Kimber Stainless II (not Target) that I used for PPC for a season and put at least 1500 rounds through it. The finish looks as good as the day I bought the gun. There's no reason STI can't do the same.

STI produced the Trojan in SS a while back but have since discontinued it.

The STI USPSA Single Stack is made of SS but has a black finish over most of the gun.

I have an STI 2011 in hard chrome. It is a tough finish and looks great.

Only if we they had the Factory hard chrome option that they have int he States. I would of gladly paid the extra coin to have it done from factory. On the bright side it makes you look like a hero that has put 1xx,### rounds down range.

I have heard that gunsmith hard chroming can be better than factory chroming.
So the object would be to put a few thousand rounds down range, get it in shop in off season and hard chrome.
They are supposed to be able to bring the rail tolerances real tight too.
I will make more research on this once and if i get there, but the option is there

WTF are you talking about? Factory hard chroming is not only available in the US. I have an STI 2011 (Eagle 5.0) that is factory hard chromed and I've seen lots of other STI guns (Eagle, Edge, Executive, Sentry, etc.) with factory hard chrome finishes in Canada.

I am pretty sure i know what he meant
Those that have hard chrome as a standard no problem, those that have it in option, seems like it's quite the wait to get them done that way at STI and get them in.
Or maybe his dealer did not even offer it, at freedom ventures pretty much any STI you click on you can check the hard chrome option for a few hundred bucks.
