Looking to buy a 9mm, would like to have a ruger p series or a smith and wesson MP. Also looking for someones opinion on the Norinco NZ-85B 'CZ-85 Type' 9x19mm. I am new to the pistol scene and just starting my search

thanks

I have a P85 Mk.2 that I enjoy. I say enjoy, because it is not a target pistol, so I don't expect that kind of accuracy from it; it was designed as a police/ armed services pistol. However, it's quite effective at "combat distances", is tough as nails, eats anything and is dead reliable. I put adjustable sights on mine, and when I get the BC CFO to quit d*%!ing around and issue me the ATT I want, I'll be trying those out.
Personally I find it to be a tad big for my hand, and have put on a set of Pachmayr grips with their front strap section cut off, but it's still not as comfortable as I'd like. My winter project is to make a set of hardwood (oak) grips for it, and thin them down to where it fits better in my small hands.
Look up at the top of the page where the sponsors are, check out Armco. He has 2 P-series Rugers for sale right now. Also check Reliable, they often have them, under "used pistols".

You may want to give serious thought to starting out with a .22 pistol. Three reasons: they're easier to learn the basics on, ammo is WAY cheaper (3 or 4 cents a round), and trust me- they're tons of fun!
I have a Ruger MK.1 5.5 inch bull barrel that's quite accurate, and has a great trigger right out of the box.

Lots to try before you buy. I have an MP9 and I love it. Can't go wrong with any of the major brands. It's whichever one you like best, weighed against your budget. Have fun shopping. I stay away from the Norinco products on principal but a lot of other's buy 'em.

Of the pistols that you listed the M&P is pretty much the best in my opinion. The Rugers are tough, but their trigger doesn't lend itself to much in the way of accuracy. The Norc 9's are something of an oddity - the CZ clone is very heavy through the frame, much more so than the real thing, they are a great value - but so is the real CZ.

x3 on the m&p I don't have alot of experience with pistols, but I got the m&p 9mm for my first and love it.. I also just got a norinco np-28 and I like it also... The best advise I got here when I posted "WHAT GUN SHOULD I GET?" was go to a gun store and hold different guns and see what one fits the best and is comfortable in my hand, because it's different for everyone.. or even better if you can shoot them first

M&P is a better gun IMO but the QC is hit and miss. I think they are still too new to the market and there may be some bugs need debuted. Ruger P series were proven over years. Either one is good choice but I think M&P is a way better gun than most of the plastic out there.

I have a Norc 85 and a real CZ 75 (the Norinco NZ85B is a copy of the CZ75B with ambidextrous safety, not the CZ85B ) and I like them both ... but replace the stock grips with Hogues; the difference is night and day.

Agreed. I should have mentioned that I had the trigger smoothed and lightened; it helped some, but a target trigger it'll never be.

Have you held or shot any of these guns?

Hold as many and shoot as many as you can, then buy what works for you.

P89 I had was really accurate when you could be consitant with it. Don't count on being consistant with that gun, though.

All in all, it was a fun shooter. I'll buy another one someday. Sold it to finance my XD9 for IPSC.

That being said... don't buy without taking a look at the XD's. :) WAY better than them MP9s.

Why buy a norinco copy if you can buy a real CZ 75B for about the same price of a M&P ?

A real CZ 75B is about 600-625 $ and it's really a good first pistol (IMO)

Buy a CZ or a M&P, both are good gun ! :D

Welcome to the pistol club ;)
