I just got my Sig today, haven't shot it but just from fondling I know it's one bada$$ handgun!
Love the heft, sights, decocking lever, da/sa, etc...I say go for it, I am always keeping my eyes out for a p229r to go with my 226

try it before you buy, I have a P226R which I bought 2 weeks ago and I love it. quality of built is awsome and it shoots great. But remember, it's still a 4.4 inch barel..... used to have an M&P 9 which is by the way a great gun for the price.

shot a 226 Navy and yeah it's nice, esp the grip size for my somewhat-large hands.pro - nice big size, reasonable weight (not too heavy, not too light), good controls (i like the decocker actually), quite accurate considering it was the first time i handled it
con - the 226 Navy i shot in 9mm seemed to absorb a lot of the kick of the 9. it almost felt muffled
i dunno, i like my guns to give me more feedback than that. it was almost TOO easy to shoot. but hey, what do i know - i like shooting a 357 magnum from a 4.2" barrel. ye-haw!

Put a few mags through a friends but it was a .40, and I would have to say you feel more recoil than some other guns in the same caliber. The bore is pretty high in your hand, and for me the grip was too big to be really comfortable. Really I cant say anything else bad about the gun though. Fit and finish was great and I do know a few people who love em.

go for SIG 226 Elite in 9mm ... will be your "for ever" gun!
I have a W.German made Sig P226 in 9mm. It has seen it's fair share of rounds, probably in the tens of thousands, and it's still going strong. I shot a 1.5" group (10 rounds) at 25 meters on my last range trip, basically beating the guys shooting competiton .22lr.
I had a P226 and P220 both in stainless. Both are gone now...Liked the 226 better. Fit and finish was great, accuracy and ergonomics are good too. Problem was it wasn't as reliable as my Beretta so I let it go. P220 didn't last long I needed the money and it was my most expensive gun. not a big .45 guy anyways.
I think down the road I'll get another 226 (or maybe even a norinco clone) but I'd rather try out a few other toys out there first. I'm an equal opportunity gun owner

I bought my first SIG P226 in .40 about a year ago, now I have 12 of them. Mosquito P220, P225, P226, P228 and P229 in .22 .357, 7.65, 9mm, 40 and .45. I quess that tells you what I think about the fit and finish, the handling and fun factory of the SIG line.
