A 22-284 Build....The Baboon Slayer...Done Now With Pics

I've seen bullets blow up mid air with my own eyes. I'd like to see one in a slow motion camera come apart. There's a really nice video on YouTube of bullets hitting steel and bb's mid air. It's awesome to see how bullets seem to melt thru steel.
I'm guessing it would be nearly impossible to film a bullet come apart mid air do to the randomness and variations. Would be cool though

Boomer, the 1-12 is for 80 gn bullets which I have...........I haven't even done the rotational calculations for 90 grnrs, but it is quite likely that I can't drive them fast enough to stabilize in the 1-12 barrel. I suspect they need around 250K and I can't get that with this case and twist.
 
Okay..........so I was looking closely at the job on the barrel today and decided it wasn't perfect enough...........so I cut it off at the recoil lug shoulder and redid it. I like it better now so I'll chamber it again tomorrow........

LRS........what exactly do you base that conjecture on? There is no reason it's barrel life should be any less than a 220 Swift or 17 Rem or 204 Ruger. I will be surprised if I don't get 2 or 3000 out of it, maybe it won't keep 1/2 moa for all of them but as long as it keeps moa, I won't be rebarrelling it. It will have served it's purpose within the first 500 rounds, will be my guess...........a couple hundred dead baboons. After that it will be irrelevant...........
 
This baboon hunt slaughter you speak of is it on a farm or are they free range? I've seen trophy fees for them on some outfitters sites and yeah some aren't cheap. do you have connections for culling them? Or is it a nuisance animal issue like donkeys in Australia or hogs in the states?
 
BB...........to my knowledge all baboons in SA are free, almost impossible to contain or farm them, besides nobody would want to. The trophy fees you talk about are if you wish to export them as a trophy. I have a buddy there in SA that has another buddy who has a tree nursery. Apparently they are just like mice in his nursery forests and hugely destructive to the new trees. Not sure what kind of trees but it doesn't matter. I have been invited to shoot as many as I possibly can and to stay as long as I like and kill baboons........supposedly an endless supply. However they aren't stupid and are very quick learners.........so this is why I want a solid 500 mtr rifle, the first few days may be somewhat easy, but that won't last long and I suspect towards the end of 2 weeks my daily take may be well down into single digits.
It has been my experience that baboons are universally hated in southern Africa and most land owners encourage their demise. Much worse than the eastern groundhog or western badger, they are at the top of the most hated list when it comes to African critters.
 
Sorry guys, but the weather cleared and I was able to move my forklift into my trophy room today, sooooooo, everything else is on hold until all my mounts are up. I had planned on maybe chronographing and possibly grouping the 22-284 this weekend, but the change in weather has changed priorities. Now I have to get my mounts up and get the forklift back to the shop before we get too much more rain, or God forbid a dump of snow.........

Didn't get it rechambered today as planned so I still have a couple hours work before shooting happens.

Forklift, trophy room ? Where did you find a trophy forklift ?
I've driven them for decades and have yet to see a trophy one.

Sounds like a trophy in its own right and a fitting tool for its surroundings :) .

Anyways its easier getting it up then down. The forklift that is.

Thanks for the clarification on the prices. When I read the list under trophy fees I assumed once you shot it that's what you owed plus applicable taxes.
Would be nice having one mounted on each side of my bar. Wonder what my mastiff would think of that lol
Another question I know you may know the answer to is about high volume shooting. There's a limit on how much ammunition you can bring so do you send some ahead of time or bring a small press and reload once there? Wildcats aren't on the shelf. Also how available is 12 ga ammo? When I go over I'd like to do some wing shooting as well.
 
BB........12 ga is readily available but not cheap. I might try shipping a couple hundred rounds ahead and taking a couple hundred. Only one gun so I think I can get a couple hundred under the 5 Kg limit or maybe take the kid and wife..........15 Kgs of ammo !!!
 
I would love to see what this does to a deer.

Now I am thinking that the bullets may not be sturdy enough at those velocities having said that. Might be wrong; maybe if they can stand up to the velocities they can stand up to a game animal.
 
C_90......took a deer 2 years ago with it and it was devastating with dinner plate size exit hole............and yes it did exit at about 80 mtrs. It was in a thread 2 falls back.........No wait, that was the 234 Douglas with 105 gn Matrix bullets..........my mistake. I would expect very similar performance though............
 
Question Douglas. Well, two actually. Have you ever made up any 25 calibre wildcats and if so, what? Question #2, and I know you're not a fan of the 270, but have you ever made up any 270 calibre wildcats and if so, what??
