A 22-284 Build....The Baboon Slayer...Done Now With Pics

Another primate rifle, the Ruger gorilla slayer (circa 1963)

He should have gone to the Congo.......we saw lots of gorillas and got screamed at pretty much daily, some as close as 10 feet or so in the thick stuff. Raises the hair on your neck and arms and causes one to bring one's rifle to ready instantly, and then back quietly away.

Shotgun ready...

Nope, the weather sucks and I have been building a plow for my tractor if that gives you a clue as to the weather here.....................

The snow has finally left the coast. Have you been able to dig yourself out and get this project rolling yet?? The anticipation is killing me! Lol

I am not entirely certain how I missed this thread up until now. I guess part of it was being busy driving out to the Wet Coast and back for three months. And then deer seasons, and then Christmas, and now it is ice fishing season but the ice has been somewhat scarce. So LOOK HERE!!!! Another exciting project from the fertile imagination that brought us the .23 calibre family of critters! Happy New Year Douglas, and this is another fascinating read. THANKS for the vicarious pleasures!

Doug

Cool project.. didn't read through all but caught the part where you were blowing up bullets.

Consider the Swift 75gr Scirocco II or the Hrn 70gr GMX.. maybe they will, maybe they will not but they are far more durable then the match bullets you currently have on your menu.

Let me know

Jerry

DG..........one can go and shoot as many as he likes for nothing as a rule but in order to leave the country with any part of a critter, the Gov't wants a trophy fee. It varies with the animal but baboons run anywhere from about 150 USD to 350 USD depending on the country and company.
One can usually buy these skulls already cleaned and varnished in the shops in the cities for about 50 bucks last time I checked. I bought a buddy a hyena skull and another a leopard skull and they were cheap as I recall.........but that was a FEW years back.

The weather has improved temp wise but there is still too much snow to get up into my pasture with my truck to do some shooting.........so all is still on hold for the moment awaiting the big thaw or rain so the snow goes down a bit.
Have quite a few I want to try out including my 375 Imposter, the 22-284, buddies 338 Tikka and my own Safari 338 and my 450 Ruger, 378 Wby 325 gn loads and there is still more down there in the pile to try out I can' t remember right now.

Hey, thanks for the info. While they are neat and I wouldn't mind owning one - I'm not sure I want one that bad. Lol.

I do however look forward to some pictures upon your return

And then...................still 2 feet of wet sloppy snow in my pasture and I am unable to navigate a wheeled vehicle in it yet...........temps have improved and had significant rain in the last week but the 4 feet of snow, which has admittedly diminished still does not allow travel in unplowed areas with wheeled vehicles. I may have to plow the path out to the bench and out front to set up the chronograph and then to the backstop if I want to do any shooting within the next 2 weeks.

I'm guessing by the photos you've posted around here that you are used to dealing with bigger problems than a little snow. No more excuses!

I am kidding of course, I just want to see what that thing will do.

I use the "African Critter" (Polaris 6X6 Ranger for those who aren't fluent in Lookanese) in summer but prefer my pickup in winter cause I keep it running with ammo inside to keep it about 20-25 C. I never test with cold ammo, very bad form and can be quite costly when temps hit +40 C. I don't care about the slight decrease in performance due to cold, but I am very aware of what load testing at -10-0 and shooting at +45 can do.
Point being that I need to be able to get a vehicle up to my bench which is enclosed with a heater, just not possible at this time without some significant tractor/snow plow time first. But springs a comin'............

No problem with my 22-284 vaporizing bullets out of a 8 twist with 80 gr bergers. Shoots them 35-3600 fps. Looking to sell it if anyone is interested. Only 50 rounds fired.

Never had an integrity problem with the 1-8 twist and Sierras at those velocities either...........blow ups started at 3750 +/- but I'm looking/hoping for 3900-4000 fps

I can't believe you don't own one of those cool snow cats, like they used in "The Shining" movie!

BB................if every year was like this I would, but this year is an anomaly with much more snow than normal. Past winters I have been able to drive my truck up to the bench no problem for most, if not all the winter. Even the lifers around here say they have only MAYBE seen this much snow once before in the past 70 years. Actually had to buy chains for the tractor and build a snow blade for it. Got used a lot of hours this winter, between me and my neighbor.
It dumped a foot in early Jan then was nice for a couple days then it dumped another foot then it was nice for a week and then over 3 or 4 days it dumped another 2 feet, literally, it was crazy. The roads were closed and the schools were closed for a couple days, nothing was moving but snow plows and my tractor. Every store between here and Cranbrook was sold out of shovels, I know this because #2 son managed to break the handle on one of mine. Fixed him though and found a broken spade and changed the handle on the square nose so he was back in business grumbling and shoveling..........
