A 22, a 270, a 9.3X62, and a 12 Gauge........variation on a theme.

Depending where you live I would be adding a high velocity 22 cal for prarire dogs etc and it could work for coyotes as well. 223 likely with 22-250 as an option.

re: "...a point where we have to do it all with a small battery."

Unfortunately, I think its coming...restrictions on the number of guns allowed...just like in Europe (hence the enduring popularity of multi-barrel and switch barrel guns over there)...Enjoy buying an unlimited number of guns while you can...and plan for the four or five that you might be allowed in the future. Too pessimistic? I hope so.

The traditional rural Canadian "battery" has always been:
1. .22 LR
2. 12 gauge
3. .303 (or 30-30, 30-06, etc.)

You could do it all with that battery. Thank goodness we're not to a point where we have to do it all with a small battery.

Nothing. I would ditch the 9.3 though.

EEEEEEK!

A .223 or similar would be nice. .270 is allowed for Coyotes some areas, not NL.

So NL specific would be: .22 rimfire, .22 centre fire, .30-06 for moose, boo and black bear and 12 G.

.30-06 could of course be swapped for 9.3 or .270.

This thread better not turn in to a .270 vs .30-06.....

What else would a guy need? Well BUM summed that one up nicely.

"Need" is a word sure to take the "fun" out of everything that follows.

If it is pure "need," you can drop the .22 LR and .270... a 9.3X62 and 12 gauge will do everything that you might encounter.

But if we don't get silly with the "need thing," I would add a .22 centerfire to your initial list... probably a .22/250, I would also want a 20 gauge O/U or SXS for the uplands... so;

12 gauge pump
20 gauge SXS
.22 LR
.22/250
.270
9.3X62

I have a plan to get down to 14 total... and I am almost there. Of course 14 pieces have duplication, but they add a little spice and a change-up in the platform... that is lean enough for me.

A good rimfire, varmint rifle, cross-over rifle like the 243 or 257, a 270 or 280. I'd prefer a 35 Whelen over the 9.3x62, and diversify the 12 gauge shotguns a little: A Trap Gun, a Sporter, a Skeet Gun, a Waterfowl Gun, and a smaller gauge upland gun, either 20 or 28 gauge. Fella should also maybe have a 22 RF target/plinker and either a 9mm or 40 S&W pistol.

Definitely a selection that that would allow you to fill the 'need' and do it all. I'm probably at a point in time where I should be at least considering thinning the 'harem' down a little. However, I doubt that will be happening any time soon. Over the years I've gradually accumulated a selection of firearms and calibres I enjoy having, reloading for and using in the field. While there's a few that 'may' not get use in the field, I still get a great deal of enjoyment reloading for and testing loads in them:).
