A 22, a 270, a 9.3X62, and a 12 Gauge........variation on a theme.

I'd replace the 12ga with a 20ga upland gun. Also a 7mm Mauser would be more fitting with the 9.3, whereas a 270 would be right with a 35Whelen.

Nice... I have the 7X64 with the 9.3X62.

I would prefer a .280 with the .35 Whelen... but that is splitting hairs... just a preference for .284 bullets.

Technically you don't NEED anything, that's why I have about 40 guns and for some reason the number keeps going up (they must be breeding when I close the safe door) and I don't even hunt anymore:)

Not quite that number, but similar.
.22, .22 wmr, .222, .223, .243, .270, .303, .410, 20ga, 12ga. Close to buying a couple other calibers, and have mutiples of some listed. Add a couple other oddballs too. Am I doing it wrong?

:redface:I don't hunt as much as I used to but for those occasions, that's where I'd define those required as part of the 'I need' category. All the rest I'd classify as the;) 'I want' group:). And, there's another 'I want' on the way.

All good calibres. I have recently come to the conclusion that no matter what rifle calibres I shoot, I like em all - but I wouldn't be complete without .357 ;)

re: "...a point where we have to do it all with a small battery."

Unfortunately, I think its coming...restrictions on the number of guns allowed...just like in Europe (hence the enduring popularity of multi-barrel and switch barrel guns over there)...Enjoy buying an unlimited number of guns while you can...and plan for the four or five that you might be allowed in the future. Too pessimistic? I hope so.

The traditional rural Canadian "battery" has always been:
1. .22 LR
2. 12 gauge
3. .303 (or 30-30, 30-06, etc.)

There's a reason why 30 cal, in its many and varied forms, has been the dominant rifle calibre for the past 100 years. It has such tremendous versatility. From lower powered intermediate cartridges, up to super hot magnum cartridges, you can cover just about anything that needs doing with a 30.

I would change this up to ,

7mm stw , 9.3x62 improved , a lever action that fires both 45 colt and 454 casull ( useful for small and large game ) .... and for small game I also have a cattle dog that catches and kills rabbits and grouse :D

I think i have found the perfect do all battery for myself (not lean by any means); 22lr, 223 rem synthetic, 7mm-08, 30-06, 338 Win synthetic, 458 Win, 12 ga pump. All rifles wood/blued unless otherwise stated.

My choice of a .22, is a centerfire, probably a .223 or a .222 magnum, that I can handload across the spectrum from a rimfire to a caribou gun. I'd ditch the .270 since the cartridge hasn't been a lucky one for me, opting instead for a .280 Ackley. The 9.3X62 is a great cartridge, and is not likely to be upstaged by anything similar.
