My dad hunted his entire life with a .22 , a 30-30, and a 12 gauge pump; Never once did I ever hear him complain about his "trinity".
Right after I was first married I hunted for better than 10 years with a similar setup, a .22, a 30-06, and a 12 gauge pump and never once felt "under-gunned"

A 30-06 is a pretty good rifle for many hunting scenarios but you always need a good .22 and shotgun. Why do you think all these cal's are put on the marke, to get suckers like us to spend money on something you really don't need but want.

Handloading can increase the versatility of any cartridge including the .30/06. A cast or a FMJ loaded between 1600-1800 fps, makes a dandy small game load. If I was restricted to a single firearm, it would be a .30/06 bolt gun.
I agree and so did #### Proenneke (although he also packed a Ruger Blackhawk).
The 30.06 has a lot of very good features:
1) its moderate recoil is easy on the shoulder
2) Ammo can be found even in the remotest villages in the middle of nowhere
3) It has very good killing power and can be custom loaded to a wide variety of purposes
4) Cases can be picked up at the range for those who reload because it is so common.
That being said, my heavy game gun is a .300 Winchester Magnum and my light game gun is a .243 Winchester. My dangerous game gun is a 375 H&H Magnum. My selection is more specific for each task, but all those tasks could be performed with a 30.06, but a do it all gun is a compromise gun, jack of all & master of none, which is why I have more than one caliber

I don't consider a 30-06 a compromise for any heavy game in North America. It just works, welll! And as said, there is a wide selection of ammo to choose from: match grade to heavies to light recoil to everything in between. It's all available. I used think of 30-06 as pretty vanilla and boring, but now all I have left in my collecton are the old stand bys: 7x57, 8x57, 308, 30-06, 12 gauge (pump), 22LR semi and bolt, 9mm, and 7.62x39 (SKSs)... all the boutique calibres are gone.

Variety is the spice of life but if I had to choose only ONE center fire rifle cartridge, it would be a bolt gun chambered in 30/06. Along with a 12ga pump shotgun, fishing rod & casting net, I would never starve. The pluses of the 30/06 are too numerous to list and I really can't think of any negatives, at least for all of North & South America. I was going to toss in a .22 rim fire rifle but it is not really needed. Thankfully, I don't have to choose.
You could hand load 110 grain or use Remington 55 grain "accelerator" factory loads (not sure if still available). I would stick with head shots in either case.
I have never used an '06 for squirrels but have shot hundreds of grouse over the last 40 years with one. As a squirrel's head is much bigger than a grouse's I imagine it would be relatively easy.
