A .308 Surplus Ammo Oracle (As of Feb. 23/07)

I wouldn't hold your breath for any to come soon, or in any significant quantities. Word on the street is that the contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan are buying up all the surplus military cartridges they can find. Apparently their companies can front more cash and need more ammo than all of Canada combined.

Perhaps when there's peace in the middle east, then we'll have lots of 7.62 and 5.56 surplus again.

Not sure where your getting your int on this. Most agencies that use western firearms....get ammo from them....ie state department contracted security companies equipped with M4s use US ammo. If anything the demand is 7.62 x 39 not NATO caliber. Since that ammo is like water in the third world, it will have little impact here. One of the major issues is that SA signed onto the UN arms bill and will not be surplusing ammo anymore...

I bought a battle pack from Al Simmons and it seemed to shoot fairly well through my 99 but the rounds would get lodged in the chamber. I know someone else had mentioned a similar problem, but I am not going to risk damaging the old relic so the ammo either goes back or I sell it to some one else.

Federal's American Eagle 308 is approximately 3 dollars more per 20 pack at Al Simmons and it shoots much better with no issues, plus the brass can be reloaded if thats something your into. I think I will stick with that until I get reloading again.

Thanks,

I just bought a case from curese, he still has some sa surplus left, I think he may also have just gotten some more 7.62x39 surplus. But grab it fast boys when it's gone it's gone!

You guys that are having problems with this ammo sticking in your chambers should remember this is 7.62 NATO ammo, not .308 winchester. They have different headspace spec's.

Yes most .308's will shoot it, I have put almost 2000 porteguese 7.62 surp. thru my 88 winchester.

Shouldn't we sticky this thread and get rid of the current sticky that is not being updated?
Thanks

x2 - just wasted my time reading the first stickied oracle thread... which never actually develops into anything useful.

Does anyone know if it's possible to reload the South African surplus?

specifications from page one of this thread:

Non-corrosive Berdan Primed
147gr Match bullet FMJ
BALL M1A2 7,62x51mm
Manufactured in South Africa

Remember this catch phrase - "Boxer short word, Berdan long word; Reloadable short word, Unreloadable long word".

Yes, it is possible to reload Berdan, but you better have a good reason to put yourself through the trouble. You need a claw primer gouger-fisher-outer gadget, and Berdan type primers. Since the crimps hold the primer in place, be prepared to have weak seats unless you have a magical primer-pocket-recrimper thingamee.

(Sorry for reverting to the technical language, I know the Nutters are a literate crowd and understand the necessary use of the Queen's English.)

Posssible yes....Probably not worth the effort though.

Being Berdan primed, one would have to source primers, which are hard to come by. I'm not even sure if there is a source in Canada. That would be the primary roadblock to reloading it.

It also depends what you are shooting the SA out of too. A battle rifle with a nice loose chamber for reliability like the M14 will wear the brass out in no time anyhow. Hardly worth all the effort to only get a couple of reloads out of the stuff.

I was determined to reload some of it myself and was talked out of it by a man who knows his stuff. Hope you aren't as disappointed as I was.....:D

EDIT: Maple Leaf Eh beat me to the submit button. +1 to what he said....I forgot about the tool too, sorry.
