I have a Brn a-5 that I don't use. Would you use it to build a tac ? What would you cut the barrel to ,to use buck shot? What sights? Save as is or convert? What would you do?

DONT cut the barrel

How old is it a what cond. "if its in great shape, sell it and use the cash to buy a Tacticool shotgun"

Agree with this advice. Don't touch the A5.

A really nice shape A5 seems to go for around the $500 asking price at gun shows, not sure what they actually sell for if they do.

Aaaalright...what shape is she in and how much would you want for it??

If you really can't resist screwing a A5 up...some tips NOT to make her completely useless:

A5 is a recoil loader...don't cut the barrel shorter than 22",and then you have to turn the friction ring around to "light load" setting - or else she would only cycle with monster loads.Barrel lenght and recoil spring are close related together...the shorter the pipe the weaker the spring thing!

Sights...none on the barrel since its moving anyway, but the A5 reciver housing is solid enough...so drill and tap a weaver rail on and use a red dot or hologram sight.

:D just my 2 cents.

get a 24 inch rifle sighted bbl and a magazine extension. The A5 was used by commonwealth forces in the 1950's and 1960's with a factory long forend which covered an eight round magazine tube.

I posted this sometime ago. The gun is in nice shape. When I got it someone had had it opened for steel shot and had miss used a expandable reamer and tryed to open it to mod. choke. They left deep gouges in the choke area. To polish them out would have left the 30 in. barrel with a cyl. choke.:bangHead: I've cut and crowned the barrel to 22 in. Installed a bead sight. Just got a XS Big dot from Brownells to install. Today I got a can of Brake cleaner to clean the internals with compressed air. It is really full of old oil and dust. It also had a miss matched friction ring and I got a new one from Brownells. It's a 12 Mag. Now have the correct 3 friction rings and 2 brake rings. Once I have it all cleaned and togeather, will try to see what it likes to cycle with. If I can make it work with reduced recoil buck and 00 should be sweet. Light or heavy setting with the rings and lube on the mag. tube. I don't know. We will see?

I have older A5 set up for 3gun. 18.5 inch ribbed barrel with a finer optic front sight. I made a +1 mag extension by using a 870 extension cut and TIG welded to the bored out stock mag tub cap.

I use Win 1 1/8 universal loads and if functions flawlessly on the light load friction setting. Also shoots slug in the heavy setting without issue.

The gun is short, easy to manoeuvre and lightning fast. They make great tactical shotguns when set up the way you want them to be. Down side is that you will have to make parts vice just buying them.

IRC- Thanks for your feed back. Nordic Components makes mag ext for BPS and A-5 sold through Cactus Tac but they don't ship to Canada. I've heard that a Rem. ext will fit but you need to cut back the threads on the mag tube. I don't know if the thread pitch is the same?

I read the same thing and I tried using the 870/1100 extension, it would start but would not thread on. The A5 needs the forearm to be under compression from the cap to position the barrel in the receiver correctly. I fooled around with it for a couple of nights and then jut cut and welded it to the original A5 cap. It looks great and works like it should. The one pain in the ass is the mag spring is no longer captive which makes assembly a little more tricky.

Interesting- Glad you posted that. I'll try and see if I can find a Dealer who can order the Nordic Ext. in. If not then will need to copy your idea. Thanks.

Here is my slugger A-5 1953 Belgian Browning. This is the most accurate
smooth bore 12 ga. that I've ever owned or seen in action using Foster
type slugs. I cut and re-faced the barrel to 20 inches.I fabbed up my oun sights for it, drilled and tapped the rib and secured them with screws and Loctite 271. This beasty will tear a single ragged hole at 30 yds. with 5 shots using Winchester Super X 1oz. slugs @ 1600fps. I also managed 3 out of 5 hits on a 12" gong at 200yds. from the bench at my club. I'll never sell it.
With shot though, it's a spray-n-pray device suitable only for home defence or rats in the barn shooting.;)
