A 7.62x39 bolt gun

..... and somewhere in this world, hidden beyond the ken of mere MEN, there lurks an SKS which is trying, ever so hard, to digest a magfull of 6.5x55s!

Poor old Paul Mauser is spinning in his grave, turning out enough kinetic energy to light up a good-sized city, screaming, "Dear Gott! VOT did I do wrong????"

.

lol

Although your "puritanical" stance is beyond refute, do you know all that has happened to this chunk 'o' iron? Better yet, do you have crates of 1000rds 6.5x55 for under 200 hundred bucks?

Lots of 96's converted to various calibers...one of the lowest pressured, cheapest shootin' chamberings is "un trustworthy"

C'mon guys! Even Numrich used to have a "short Mauser" conversion kit for large, and small ring mausers....before you tell me 6.5x55 can be reloaded readily, is it still as cost effective on "bang/buck" than this in 'surp?

Have you had a look at the rifle yet?

Ok...we're in the 'surp forum, and I don't wanna type this too loudly...

I look at everything A_Steyer posts. I'm still too broke to jump on anything, but he's put out quite a few 7.62x39's...NONE were "collectible" to begin with. Just basically parts turned into shooters. Not collectables into ??

There is a pretty good crowd of bolty 7.62x39'ers...a threaded SKS barrel can be fitted to a '96. No, not pretty. No, not F-class. Yes functional. If you're slinging surplus, accurate enough.

For a functional, repeating bolty 7.62x39, do you have a better buy?
(I already have a Norinco)

I guess it depends on if you want to throw lead around or actually HIT something.

Six-five-55 is no more hideous than any other calibre to handload. You can put out match-grade ammo for about 65 cents a pop, good out to 1100 yards. What's wrong with that?

I have yet to see the 7.62x39, full or semi-auto or bolt or whatever, that can turn in solid 1 MOA accuracy with surplus ammo. About 2 MOA is the best I have seen out of the cartridge, and that was with handloading it and shooting at no more than 75 yards. A long-range proposition it is not.

Oh well, maybe they can get the SKS to eat .223s. They are real cheap, I'm told!

The 7.62x39 can be made to shoot well in a quality bolt rifle with handloads. It isn't the best for long range but the recoil is low and it is cheap to load. The target below was shot at 100yds.

I've seen your targets...I can understand how 2moa won't "hit anything" for you. I would need some serious practice to shrink my own groups to 2moa, regardless of equipment used...I'm one of "those guys" who have never squeezed a trigger at 1000 yds, but have rifles that can reach that far.

I've learned (tuition free) a considerable amount from your posts regarding 'surps [and general history], and the need to preserve them. I'm sure that this wasn't a pristine example ripped up to bring you a 96/SKS hybrid. Most likely "brought forth from parts" so someone could get an affordable to own, operate, and low recoiling rifle. It may even have a deer, or so left in it.

Again, I don't re-load yet. I do enjoy squeezing the trigger, and ever-so-slowly I'm improving/shrinking my groups. I'm certainly not wasting a keystroke on a 6.5x55 vs. 7.62x39 debate. I love my Ljungman, and miss my '96. I don't own an SKS, and sold my Rashid (so Santa could come) last October.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a 7.62x39 bolt gun. I just found it funny how that sks barrel retains it's rear sight/op rod/takedown assembly (forgive me for not knowing the technical term).

Actually, my late friend Gavin Tait was quite taken up with the idea of a Carcano action mated to a Douglas barrel and chambered for a 6mm wildcat based on the 7.62x45 Czech round. Unfortunately, his ticker gave out before we could build the thing. It was to have been based on a $15 gun-show Carcano action which turned up mysteriously in my junk box.

Nothing wrong with the idea of a 7.62x39 bolt rifle. It would be a real hummer in a miniature 98 Mauser, for that matter. It's just that there don't seem to be a lot of Swedish Model 38 actions lying around..... and I rather quake at the idea of using up a damned decent rifle for making up a Frankengewehr of any sort.

Come to think of it, the idea of using the rest of the SKS to build a .223 isn't all that horrible, either. I just wonder if it could be done without spending over a grand on the project.

In short, it's not the IDEA which appalls me, but rather the execution thereof.

Poor Paul!

Poor Sergei Gavrilovich!

cast bullets in 6.5x55 is your best bet lets not bubba every rifle that does not have cheap ammo. there was a time in history for it when these things where sold back in the 60's ect but now no need to bubba any milsurp in fact i know quite a few guys who got banned from milsurps forums for doing just that.

the they're cheap and plentyful mindset has to stop like i said that ws a thing farmers did for no reason at all if you cant carry a 8lb rifle into the deer woods maybe its time to stay out of the deer woods :p

I thought it was a '96. More tuition free learning for me. Can't/won't argue...an "all matching" '38's value would exceed this EE offering. In fact, at the asking price, it might be a good "restoration" project for someone with deeper pockets than my own. ESP someone puritanical enough to know how it "should" look.

I've read about a Norinco 5.56 SKS, but haven't actually seen one. It's been tried though.

Bubba is a strong word. Again, from the standpoint [I think it's pretty safe that everyone in a milsurp forum shares] of ripping down a complete 38 to provide this, would be just plain wrong. Also foolish....a complete matching '38's value would certainly exceed the asking price of this one. Should you happen to have the action (perhaps in a job-lot) and the barrel (which threads into a 96 action with minimal tweaking), whip up from parts alone a functional rifle, in a "popular" caliber, you're not a bubba, but a firm supporter of the "general" shooting community. The majority of shooters don't hand-load. I know I should, but don't yet. If you saw a market of folks like me, you'd be able to provide a cheap, fully functional and possibly "enjoyable" rifle into hands that will actually get to fire it.

Again, with all respect [now that we are flogging the same dead horse], parts turned into a rifle is better than parts hoarded for what they "ought" to be. Someone will squeeze their trigger, and get enjoyment from it MOSTLY 'cause it will be at a target, or deer, and not from a trench at someone pointing a different one right back!

It's pretty easy to condemn someone who takes a pristine example, and hacks it up. ESP in 2012. It's not so easy to see, from 'surpy parts to a functional rifle where the flaw is...this isn't Bubba, it's an armorer of the masses.

many guns are bubbaed not built from parts. the thinking of just because its cheap and theres alot of them does not mean you should hack them up thats how things like ross rifles are almost never seen full military stock. in the 40's the military cut alot down(ranger/home gaurd rifles) and then alot where also cut down by people

7.62 X 39 bolt action rifle

Quite a few years ago I managed to get some SKS barrels that were chrome lined and NOT drilled for a gas port. These were the type that were not threaded and intended to be "pinned" into the action.

I also had a Swede 96 mauser action that "bubba" had got to first (barrel cut, wood gone, parts missing).

The idea of a bolt action 7.62 X 39 rifle appealed to me, so I married the SKS barrel and the Swede action together. The Swede rear sight was retained.

It was a bit tricky getting the extractor to work reliably and the magazine had to be blocked because of the shorter cartrige.

The barrel was fitted using "go - no go" gauges until it had a very tight head space. I hoped that having the head space at a minimum, the accuracy might be better.

Well, it works like a charm!. Handy, light and quite acurrate. I have taken it with me on the deer hunt several times.
