Well I got out again for a few hours today. Thoughts of the earthpig that got away last Friday still fresh in my mind. After torrential rain yesterday it was nice to see blue sky and sunshine. I drove out the the fields where that elusive hog from 2 days ago got a second chance at a longer life. It was not out of it's burrow so I slowly drove on the edge of the field to see if there were any others out. I spotted a familier shape about 500 yards ahead in the middle of the field. A quick check with the binos confirmed that a hog was sunning itself right by it's burrow. It was on higher ground then me and if I wanted to get a shot at a downward angle I had to get past it. Experience has shown me that if you walk past them they bolt but often a truck driving by doesn't scare them as they are used to farm equipment. So I drove the Jeep along the edge past the hog and it never went underground! I parked about 100 yards past it grabbed my rifle and shooting sticks picked a safe line of fire but found that the lay of the land where I was still gave me an upward angle for the shot. The hog was on a short rise and I would have to get perpendicular to it. So I slowly started to crawl until I had the shot I wanted. Set the .243 on the shooting sticks, took a minute to calm down and started to squeeze the trigger. Bang, flop! DRT.
Walked over to it, smallish in size, must be one of this years models. Took a few pics, filled up the hole and put a marker flag by the burrow so that Mr. Farmer can find it and level the ground later.
I spotted a big sucker a while later but he was too close to some homes and there was no safe angle to shoot it from so I watched it go about it's buisness for a while and called it a day.
A few pics from today
Sunny days at last!
You can really see how the land rolls in this shot.
For those that want to know the rifle is a custom 243 built around a Remington 600 action shooting 80gr. psp
The happy hunter ( my wife hates being asked to take these pictures
