she is our pet dog, pure breed, 4y, hunter by nature. Nose is always on the ground, and she is ready to chase those bunnies.

my concern is that I never let her off leash except in the dog park....
I am afraid if I let her loose in the woods she would take off, picks up and smell and never comes back. almost happened before while camping.

Any advice? is there some training I can provide her?

Thanks,
Mo

yeah.... I heard that before.... not sure the rationale behind it...
wouldn't she typically get lost?
Why would she attempt to come back to my jacket?

by the way, I had her for 2 years now... she was adopted.

You under rate your dog. She will use her nose to follow her backtrail eventually ,thus the jacket left for her. Not all dogs will do this but it is a great trait for a scent dog. Most dogs are competent enough to follow their backtrail but may search for you beyond the jacket.

Sounds like she her recall needs some work, but don't worry it's easy to fix.

Just get a long, thin rope...50' is what I used...tie it to her and let her go. Walk around, play with her, make it fun. Then try calling her back. Praise and treat if she comes back. If she doesn't, reel her and start over again(no praise/treat). Practice this until she comes back without fail.

Oh and make sure to do this in different places and not just your backyard. You want to make sure she comes back every time no matter the distractions. Just be patient and she'll get it.

I have a 4yr.old Beagle, beagles are very pig headed especialy when they are on a trail. Our beagle would take off on a trail and would always be back in 1/2 hr or so,then it got to be 7 or 8 hrs.People where spotting her 4 and 5 miles for our cabin. When she got on a scent you could not get her to come back,so i bought myself a electronic training collar made for beagles. The box on the collar is only about 1" square i used it on her twice about 2 years ago and have never had to use it,or even put it on her again. If she can hear me call her she comes. She even retrieves grouse for me now.

We use beagles for deer, some will run a long ways but most of our dogs seem to know when to stop. In the last 5 years we have only had to search for the dogs the next day once, that beagles went over 5 miles in one day and took up the track again in the morning. All dogs are different, if you are using it to hunt rabbits they will run circles as the rabbits do not travel that far away from home if using it for deer be careful.

They seem to learn by doing, if you have them out with seasoned dogs it cannot hurt. My Dad used to run the pups with the oldest dog, it always seemed to work, when our seasoned dog died it took a few years for the young ones really get going. There was only one year of overlap with the dogs and we only used 3 back then. This year we have the two older ones, and 4 pups, 2 of which hunted last year, things should get interesting.

My beagle seems to come back...they are very head strong. If your dog is like mine you NEED to bring treats...but even so our dog doesn't listen the best in the field, wonderful in the house but different story outside. She likes to track deer...I'm trying to get her out of that, because like the other guy said rabbits run in circles deer don't.

I try to go on about my walk without waiting for her...I want her to think I am in control and she had better keep up. this seems to work, but if we go on the same trail several times she knows where we are going she goes further into the bush.

Best thing is to try small amounts of time and see what happens

mrefaat, I have hunting dog(s) and find that the e-collar is worth it's weight in gold. I will never be without one now. Try John Wade's website, I think it is
www.johnwade.com He is amazing with doggie phsychology and all behaviour problems. My dog is very valuable to me, so he is microchipped and tagged, even when hunting. My friend with deer hounds used to do the coat and food bowl in the woods. It worked for him.;)

would it help if I take her out with other beagles that are old time hunters?
I've found that dogs seem to learn from others.

If nothing else as long as the other dogs are trained, they will usually follow them.

Here is Bosco. Right now he only "Hunts" Monkeys and Socks :)
He has a killer nose though.

thats what my beagle likes to hunt and the odd rat he can find in the yard. problem with my dog is he opens the french doors to let himself outside but he won't close it. house is always cold. beagles are strange dogs.

Haha, Bosco and Sammy (our other Beagle) like to yell (bark) at the door to open/close.

i have lever handles in the house. he just stands up, hooks the lever and pushes or pulls as nessasary. he even does it to let my lab in and out. drives the wife crazy
