My buddy bought the hornandy book, and i printed the hodgons data off the site.

I am loading 45acp, 230 gr round nose, with winchester 231 powder..

The hodgons says the minimum powder charge is 4.3 grains (maximum 5.3 grains). Hornandy says 5-5.7 grains..

Opinions welcome.

Hodgdon has fairly recently reformulated their powders and they DO require less powder per charge. 4.3gr to start with sounds about right.

I'd like to do a little of both.

Realistically i was expecting to load differently. Just in the process of reading up on what variables do/affect what (higher velocities, accuracy, recoil, etc).

The older the books generally the hotter the loads. If you’re achieving your desired power factor, the gun racks well, your hitting well without brass damage, it's all good. Compressed loads and data outside normal Original equipment manufacturing should be discouraged but wildcats will disagree. Keep records of your cartridge loads and your should find something that works well for the sweet spot.
Have fun and play safe.
