A bit more on the Glock 19 and its adoption by the US Army

The store I worked in for a while back home in Virginia sold 19s at a ratio of 4:1 to the 17s.

When you think about logistics, especially in a MIL/LEO context, being commercially popular has huge benefits. Just think of the spare parts and accessories alone. That's not to say that the compacts are more popular than the full sized in those circles, but popularity in the civilian world is definitely something to consider.

Something in the grip angle make the 19 a lot closer to a 1911 than a 17, the 17 always felt like a 2X4 for me at least, size of the hands is not it, more of a conception difference...
Something is sure, a herd of Glocks without a 19 is missing the flagship pistol of the make...

Buying a G19 Gen 4 been a revelation in the handguns world for me, and many that would try it would agree with me... JP.

I have handled a 17, but not a 19. I have always assumed that the 19 is the "Commander" version of the 17. That is, same gun, just a bit shorter in barrel and grip. I have assumed things like grip angle are the same.

Am I wrong?

I don't believe there is any difference in grip angle from the ones I've handled grip length yes..

The 19's grip is 1/2" shorter than it's big brother, but they didn't just shave the length off of the bottom of the grip. It came from the middle, raising the palm swell a bit higher giving it a totally different feel. It seems to be more comfortable for those of us with small to medium size hands.

I like thier choice. The Glock 19 is one of my fav's also. So compact and accurate. 15+1 capacity, same as the M9 but smaller and lighter weight. A 3rd gen G19 with night sights and 16 rounds of +P 147 grain JHP would be a great carry gun in an IWB concealed holster.

I don't know about all of the technical aspects of the grip, but I held and shot a 17 then held and shot a 19 and to me there was a significant difference. I took the 19 home with me. The 17 did not feel comfortable at all and the 19 just melted into my hands. For perspective, I like the grip on a 1911 style gun and I also like the stock grip on a CZ Shadow. I don't care so much for the feel of a Sig or Beretta. I think my hands are on the medium to small size.

In terms of the popularity of the 19 south of the border, I suspect their carry laws have a lot to do with it. Even with the barrel poking out the end a little on my 19, it fits nicely in my pocket with room to spare.

What about this part , "Elements of Army SOF have used the Glock 22 for years " , I'd just like to know some more about this , have they been using the .40cal full size Glock or is that just a typo ?

Yes Army SF have been using Glock22s for quite some time since they ditched their 1911's and M9s early on in the GWOT. They tried to use double stack .40s from STI for a while but they weren't able to get them to run reliably and eventually selected the G22 there are even special contract of completely FDE standard and extended G22 mags.

The Glock in all sorts of flavors have been in use with USSOCOM and JSOC including the G19, G26, G17, G34, G35, G22, G17 and probably more for quite a while. There are some units now running 34s with RDSs ( Docters,T1s, RMRs and MRDSs) mounted on them the reason for the Safariland 6354DO and certain SMU's have guns with the T1s mounted via the ALG mount. The Glock has a very solid foothold in the SF community it would be nice to see it bleed over to the conventional forces side.

Yep... this is it right here. This issue comes up week-after-week, year-after-year, generation-of-new-shooter-after-the-next, and still people continue to say... and want to believe... that a GLOCK 19/23 is just a GLOCK 17/22 with a half inch off the front and the bottom. People buy a 17, often times as a first pistol, they are generally not all that satisfied with it, but they don't want to justify spending anything more on the GLOCK concept... so out come all the same old lines... yawn... snore....

The feel is totally different, and the overall shoot-ability and experience with the pistol goes way up on the positive side, and I would say it is not really dependent on hand size (i.e. 17/22's are better for large men with larger hands, whereas 19/23's are better for people with smaller hands, women, etc.). Lots of large, full-size men in U.S. Special Forces (hell that's pretty much all it is, from all the photos I've ever seen), and in the FBI and these other agencies... and what do they want? They want 19's. Why? They've tried all these guns. Extensively.

9mm is a caliber that never really appealed to me, sans flavor, sans savor, kind of dull...
Everything changed with my G19 Gen 4, for the first time i really dig the 9mm, might sell all my other 9mm and buy another G19 Gen 4 with a 106mm LW barrel...

2X times wow is better than 6X times bof... JP.

I am interested to hear more about why you like it JP. I favour 1911s as well and prefer the HP and CZ over Sigs etc in 9mm. From what you have said so far I may have to re-evaluate Glock. Pretty subjective stuff.

The G19 gen 4 in hand feel very close to my Les Baer, surprisingly close, it have to be tried, very hard to put in word, the G19 is a very comfortable handgun, making it so easy to shoot it accurately, i did not expect that after having a love hate relation with all my other Glocks... JP.

Do Gen 2 19's feel better than gen 2 17s?

To me, absolutely. I got my first 19 in 1992 or so. Everyone questioned me as it only held 15 rounds to the 17 rounds of the Glock 17. I got it because it felt much more natural in the hand. BTW, all my Glocks are 2nd generation. I hate finger grooves.

I CCW with a Gen 4 Glock 19, love it, but thru in a NY2 'orange tigger' to give me 12Lbs trigger pull, AKA like a double action squeeze. I don't use this for target applications, strictly for defence, and all my range pracs reflect this, BTW, in a real situation, with a squirt or 3 of adrenaline that 12Lbs will be like a hair trigger.

If the army goes for it then G 19 waiting list will be 3 years. He hehe. It's already hard to get certain guns or ammo up here in Kanadastan as it is. Having said that... I've shot G 17 GEN2 for twenty years and I've recently held G19 Gen 3. What a difference. Just handles nice. Points better. I've been debating on making a move but the attachment I have to my old 17 is hard to break. So maybe I'll save up and keep both.
