Hey last calibre question for a while.

i got my left handed A bolt 30 cal, love it, been sort of chasing something with a bit more legs than the 7mm-08 , to be on that 400 meter mark, without heavy recoil.

ive talked about rechambering one of the kimber barrels , however it makes sense to not mess with a beaut kimber, wereas the A bolt isnt such a gem, barrel are available to replace if any dramas..

so some questions around the A bolt barrel, 30-06- is the twist suitable for the 30-284.

i feel with a good recoil pad, and at worst case a muzzle brake, it should be fine for my recoil shy shoulders and anticipation.... :stirthepot2::p

EDIT--

Staying on the 30-06 round, currently using heavy 180gr Woodleighs, a flat base spire point.. what is going to fly better out to 400meters to flatten the trajectory mostly?

165gr?
150gr?

suitable projectiles here if you were to have only such options
https://www.rebelgunworks.com.au/collections/projectiles/type_30-cal

dont want to spend more than $2 a projectile, so TTSX, ACCUBONDS are out, some ELDm, SST, gamekings, interlocks etc available.

thanks

You would be simply wasting money to do that conversion and you could end up with feeding problems that would require more work. Those cartridges use the same twist...

Righto , i heard with the longer action an being able to seat it a bit further it would surpass the 30-06, so i thought it might of been worth that.. sounds a negative venture

Right, so its 30-06--------

this is what projectiles i can get down under- without spending $2 a projie, what cup an core would suit for 400...... im thinkin Speer 165gr boattail sp..

EDLX is $1 X 1, Accubonds are in the $2 X1 ... as are TTSX, not keen.
SST close to $1x1 , others interlocks, ballistic tips, and gamekings available....

The 168 TTSX is perfect for the. 30-06. Its all I've fed mine. In the big picture, whats an extra $50...

The 165 gr bullet was a favorite of mine when i shot the 30-06. Haven't tried the newer style bullets in the 30 cal as i have moved on to 6.5x55 as my main hunting cartridge. From the pic on post #8 i would say you have a great load right there.

Im on the 150 gr bandwagon simply because I and my siblings were all raised on wild meat harvested with a 30-06 , truck loads of it. Mostly Elk & Moose but a lot of deer as well as a sheep or 2. The old man had a 450 yrd limit to shots taken and he was quite proficient with that old Mauser at that range. As for the slug construction, he used just run of the mill bulk bullets, Dominion brand until they went out of business and then used mostly bulk Hornady's . The most important point here is that , with these bullets I cannot remember him loosing a wounded animal...at any range.

Another fact to the story, he loaded all the shells for 4 or 5 others in his regular hunting party and every one of them to a man used a 30-06 with the same slugs he did and got their fair share of game as well....you just cant argue with success.

I can't speak to bullet availability in AU, but for a hunting round, with expected to be fairly low volume once you get the load development out of the way, when you consider all the costs of hunting, does an extra 0.50 - $1 per round really matter?

I go out for a week I fire two shots if I am lucky. I spend more than that on coffee to the hunt camp.

I did up a load for my dad to be used in his 30-06. He has lots of chances to shoot Canadian Moose at 300+.

200 Gr Nosler Accubonds for the win. High BC, low wind deflection, slower out of the gate but maintains velocity over long distances much better, which means more terminal energy.

https://www.projectilewarehouse.com.au/products/nosler-308-200-gr-accubond-50-pack Look its on sale.

On the other hand, looking at your options, If I were you I would buy all three boxes of https://www.projectilewarehouse.com.au/products/hornady-30-cal-308-200-gr-eld-x-1

and I wouldn't bat an eye lash. Like seriously, buy all three RIGHT NOW. At under $1 a round, and on sale to boot, I feel like they are giving those away.

two questions:

Whats the twist on your barrel? I want to assume its 1-10 = good to go.

Second, have you told us what you are hunting?

Rhys, I do not know anything about availability in Australia, but a great bullet for the 30-06 out to 400 would be the Swift 165 grain Scirocco II.
The second choice would be the Accubond. Dave.

Sst 180gr from my 300mw have been very accurate to 400 yards and expansion in water jugs have been picture perfect. I own the slowest 300wm in canada so i was spitting these at 2880fps so almost 3006 territory. Up close youd really have to pick your shot on stout game. I havent used the 30cal sst on game but have used them in my 2506 with excellent predictable expansion
I use 180gr ppsn woodlieghs for the 300wm for close shots and the 180gr sst if watching larger cuts or berry patches

Have not shot a 30 cal in a long time, but sure had good luck with 165s. Cup and core were what I used mostly. Heart lung shots seldom recovered a bullet, shoulder hits some through and through some recovered.

For a cup and core I would look at the 165 grain hornady interlock flat base. It has shot well in every 06 I have had and works well on game (black bear and deer anyways). Not every 06 I have had shot the boattail version as well and I think the flat base are a little tougher.

I go Berger VLDs for any load I plan on regularly shooting well past 200 yards. Very accurate and deadly for me. If they’re pricey where you are, and you’re on a real tight budget SSTs or ELD-X for a little bit more money.
