A bolt 30-06 400m hunting projectile choice

165gr or even 150gr btsp from Speer, Sierra & Hornady would be all excellent choices if on a budget. Should flatten the trajectory considerably from the 180gr Woodleighs & still expand ok at 400.
I do find the 150gr loads easier on the shoulder off the bench than the 180gr full house 30-06 loads.

Aww but what will i then slow stalk or sit an wait with ? an what will i take in all weather week long hunt trips? and what about backpacking in the alps, , the ruger303 an 375bb and 3006 are great to mix up the hunts on the occaison.
its not uncommon for me to hunt 2-4 times a week, all year round an some months i may take 2 -3 weeks off due to weather , we have great laws for all year hunting here, i can justify having the different ones, i am just looking for that longer all rounder- the AI sounds cool haha

More to the point conner i like cartridges and different ones- so im fairly open to any dumb re chambering , if its different and provides what im chasing, i wont take offence to your opinion- some of us like shootng, some like hunting, some like pistols and some like talkin about it, others enjoy doin it

Without getting into specific bullets, if I knew I would be looking at longer shots I would pick a streamlined, boat-tail 165 gr. The 150's might start out faster, but by the time you get to 400 yds plus, the 165 will likely have retained more velocity and energy.

The drop difference between 150’s and 165’s won’t be very much, spoken from a guy who has shot both from a 308. Like 9.3mauser said, wind drift will be the bigger issue. I’d look at Nosler’s 168 grain offerings, probably the best compromise of bullet weight and bc. Also, look into accubonds. With the 30-06 you’re going to get some pretty good velocity out of either bullet weight. I know you’re talking about 400 yards shots, but what about 50 yard shots? I personally don’t like lead and copper thoroughly distributed throughout my meat. The bullet will likely be the cheapest part of your setup / hunt, don’t cheap out on it.
I saw your other thread about your 7-08 struggling at 400 yards, seems odd. 400 isn’t much of a challenge for my 308’s, or the 308’s of other guys I shoot with, or the 243 I used to have, or my creedmoor’s. To me it sounded like a mismatch of the reticle to the velocity of your bullet or a mismatch of your velocity and zero distance. You said you were 1-1.5” high at 100, I find with most “drop reticles” that with regular short action cartridges you’re best to zero bang on at 100. That way each sub tension down should be the next 100 yards. It also helps to find the sub tension detail for your reticle, as in how many moa are between each of the sub tensions. Then one must always verify with their setup.
Nothing wrong with the fact that you bought a 30-06, but your 7-08 should have been fine out to 400, with less recoil (something you mentioned not caring for). I think a 140 out of the 7-08 would be just fine once you have it dialled in.

Has anyone necked up the Weatherby RPM case to 7mm or 308. It would fit nicely in a standard action. It would also have more powder capacity than the AI cartridges.
i was thinking of reaming the bore to 338??? i hear 338 bullets drop less than 7mm........... but hear great things about 7 rem mag case, so a 338-7 mm rem mag works yeah??

i want to keep the 708 as a ultralight rifle an my intention is to use it out to 400m on general back pack hunts an bush stalking missions is goes on...... the left handed 30-06 was to complete me as a left handed shooter in owning my first LH rifle.
i will set the 7 rem mag uup for 250+ an practise with it confidently past 400m an further in time. i am a hunter not a shooter , so its new grounds slinging lead at them well out there , i like the fatc i will be keeping the .284 projectiles, change weights and different hunting scenerios.
likely the 3006 stays in thesafe for thenext 12 months while i play with a Rem mag, then after that see where i am at with the desire to shoot 400m without clicking or 45 inch hold overs.
i wont touch on much of the rest of your post it has good info, but the 50m comment, it happens, but in particular i can go into gulley country an glass animals at 300-500 any day of the week, or sit off farmland an have them come out at night etc.... i wouldnt chose my 7 rem mag an long barrel to hunt tight bush valleys which are common.... its a specialty rifle

generally, the 150s will shoot flatter to 400yds
they will also damage more meat on account of higher velocity
the 168 looks like the best of both worlds (even though I'm partial to 180s)
avoid the ELDM as they're target bullets. ELDX is the hunting variety
in the end, choose what your rifle shoots best (you could wear a barrel out chasing this "best" thing. Don't ask me
)No flies on that. Not ultralight but it will soak up the recoil.

my first ever biggame rifle was a sps in 270 win, it was only a few yr ago i sold it, to make way for others, an obviously you have seen my chase has proberly been since that 270 shooting vor tex flat and fast, i killed deer at 370m no worries with those, like you buzzed me on havin a 3006, 708, 303,,, they are all the same schit, - i know
!i just want individual rifles an different brasses for different courses, an i think i am going to hit the nail on the head with the weight of the Rem700 blued SPS, with a reasonable weight 4-12x40 freedom i rekon, new recoil pad cos this one has gone gummy, as those r3 do, a nice 139gr interlock with a fair poke of power, a bi pod, an some trigger time.... it should be perfect.
i know the 7 rem mag is the perfect NZ alps rifle, in hindsight i am wanting that nz experience in our alps an the valleys r bigger than at home here, so 400-500 isnt going to be yahoo-ing at a animal, ! itl be a while til that happens.
il post up when i get the rig anyway! it has 1 an 30mm rings for the leupold bases, set of dies and looks around 30-50 brass for it , $600 isnt bad at all really.
