I've decided to refinish the wood stock on my A bolt hunter. Removed the recoil pad and it separated from the hard plastic spacer between it and the wood.
This is my first browning stock refinish and not sure which way to go from here.
Is the spacer part of the recoil pad?
Part of the stock?
If it needs to be removed I'm thinking leave it in place until ready to reseal stock to maintain the sharp edge on the butt of the stock?
I'm thinking of installing a factory fit Limbsaver recoil pad and it doesn't look like it has a spacer included in the package. The for any input RB

The recoil pad has now been split into two pieces. Originally the pad is added to the stock, then the whole works sanded to be the same dimension, the rubber portion is then covered while the stock finish is applied.

I would replace the entire pad at this time.

That's a hard finish to remove, but not impossible. Browning's are known for it. I use Circa 1850 furniture stripper, and a few of the thin spring steel body fill applicators. You may need to hit some stubborn spots of that lacquer finish several times...to get it completely gone.
Best of luck with it !

This is a BLR I did several yrs ago. Needed 4 or 5 hits of the 1850 to get rid of all the finish.

I would saw the black spacer off the wood, make the wood flat and install a new Decelerator pad. It's not an easy job.
